LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:

Flixify.com is a site where women can learn how to navigate the complex world of digital video editing. Scrapbooking is a huge, explosive market, and digital photo and video scrapbooking is becoming the norm. Because of the high learning curve with digital editing, we are building a how-to site where moms can watch video tutorials that walk them through each step in the flow, including getting video off their tapes and onto their computers, adding music and cool transitions, uploading their clips to blogs, burning to DVDs, etc.

HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:

We are Ruby on Rails developers with a nack for spotting good looking websites, but zero talent when it comes to designing the sites ourselves. We need a design with a razor-sharp focus that appeals to young, savvy moms. We know it's somewhat cliche, but we want a clean, light design with plenty of white space so that it doesn't feel crowded or claustrophobic.

The website will have a few main areas that need to be accounted for in the design:

1. Homepage that really highlights the fact that this is a video how-to website. This means we'd like a placeholder on the home page where users can watch a short intro about how the website will work.

2. Video tutorial section. This should have room for the users to watch the current video, with show notes below the video. The left or right-hand nav would have a list of links of all the videos available for them to watch, similar to a table of contents.

3. Article pages. A nice design for pages like 'About Us', 'How it Works', blog-like articles, etc.

4. Forum area. Pretty straight forward; we'll just use the same chrome and styles so that the 3rd-party forum matches the rest of the site's design.

OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:

We have a strong focus on women between the ages of 29-39. We anticipate most will be mothers who have home videos and tons of digital photos that they would like to share with friends and family. The colors and artwork should really appeal to women in this crowd by making them feel that digital editing is something they can do. Since they are already frustrated with their amassing digital collection, we don't want them to be confused while on our site. It should clearly guild them in the steps they need to take to easily walk through the signup and into the how-to video sections.

WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:

Can't praise this site enough. Really love the simplicity and layout. It would be ideal to have a similar site, but to incorporate some more feminine colors and artwork:

Anything by 37Signals,

Simplicity, thick borders, nice color pallet, good artwork:

The brown and blues. It's a little too plain, but the colors are great:

Like the use of creative header and footer, use of sidebars:

The lime greens, the clean lines, layout:

A little too yellow and chipper, but we like the woman and the scrapbooking theme:

WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:

Appeal to women. That's the biggest request. Other than that, we're excited to see what you come up with!

We don't have a logo yet because we really want the website design to take shape first. Feel free to throw in a placeholder for the time being. Who knows, maybe we'll like the placeholder enough to just go with it on the live site!!

Things we dont like or don't need for this project or other things to avoid using, doing, seeing, etc.:

We've been through every free template site on the web, so we know a template knockoff when we see one ;-). We want something original, unique, and totally chicky. Here are a few examples of sites with cluttered designs that we don't like (it's really hard to only list a few websites as things we don't like since sooo many sites are really lame!)
