Etsy Theme Shop

What do you do?

We take a boring old shop from Etsy.com and spruce it up with colorful, beautiful themes! The themed shop is then displayed on Facebook, or a dedicated website. Here's an example:

Original, not themed: http://sht.tl/gAUL
Themed (bird theme), on facebook: http://sht.tl/sDL0

Do you have a desired website screen size?

The majority of our users are on Facebook, so please optimize for 810px wide (the size of a facebook tab page), but keep the design fluid enough to be able to expand to fill the user's screen, because this app also runs on blogs, websites, etc.

How many pages (maximum of 4) do you need designed?

1 main page, 1 sub-page, themed with 4 different themes

Target Audience

What is your industry?

Describe the target audience for your website design

Users of our webapp are mostly female, who own their own at-home business creating jewlery, clothing, and other handmade accessories. We have the exact same userbase as Etsy.com (just on a much smaller scale), and we want to satisfy the thirst for a more beautiful, customized shop; rather than the plain-jane shop that Etsy.com allows for.

What 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your website design

1. Facebook is cramped -- We want a feeling of Openness.

2. Cleverly use transparency to make the theme show through when it can.

3. Simplicity. Navigation should be intuitive and easy.

How is your company different from your competitors?

We want the look and feel of our themes to be so bold and beautiful that shop owners *need* to have us.

Style and Concept

What colors do you want to see in your website design?

Colors vary based on the theme. See the themes requirement in the "additional info".

What colors do you NOT want to see in your website design?

N/A

What adjectives should best describe your website design?

Eclectic, beautify, serene, sexy, polished.

What content must be included in the website design?

We need our current "storefront" redesigned. It's a single, themeable page with two views: the main view and the listing detail view. Those that use our app are mostly women that create their own products and sell them.

A working demo can be found here:
https://www.facebook.com/etsythemeshop/a...

Hit refresh to see the various themes that we offer. The main view is the first thing you see when the page loads. It has a bunch of items in squares. The listing detail view is what you see when you click an item and it opens in a new "tab".

Yes, the layout is ugly, and the themes are lame. That's where you guys come in.

SOME COMPLAINTS WE'VE HEARD:
"I don't like the grey background"
"The ads are bigger than the items on my store" (they aren't, but many people think they are so we're doing something wrong here)
"You don't have enough themes"

WHAT WE DON'T LIKE

We hate hate HATE how constrained our theme is. You see it there in the middle, with all that grey surrounding it? Our app is called Etsy THEME shop for goodness sakes. We want the theme to FILL the page. I like how Google does their theme on their email client. It takes up the WHOLE PAGE. We want our themes to POP and just immerse the shop in it. Cleverly use transparency to make the theme show through when it can.

YOU HAVE COMPLETE CREATIVE FREEDOM, as long as these notes are adhered to:

BANNER --
It should look good with or without the shop banner on the top.

ADS --
The ads should not blend in so much that people get upset that the ads are "part of" their shop. But we want the ads to not stick out like a sore thumb either. Ads can be turned off, and if they are the user's items will fill that empty space.

Also, for the Shop Owner, there is a call to action to purchase an ad or to turn off ads. See the screenshot here for an example: http://sht.tl/cuh

BROWSING --
Click an item. See the tabs at the top? We like the idea of the user being able to browse multiple items this way, and quickly switch between them, but we aren't happy with what we've got. Either our tabs suck or there's a better way to do it. Maybe bubbles? I don't know. Go ahead and click a bunch of listings, you'll see the tabs "overflow". Your solution should take this scenario into account.

We also have categories and sub-categories. There are about 20 categories in total, most shops only show 2-5, but please account for ~10 categories max on one shop.

There is also a page switcher. We put one at the top and bottom for convenience, but that's not a requirement. Do whatever feels right to you.

THEME --
The theme should consist mainly of these layers (in order of importance):

1. A background image, that is meant to fill the entirety of the shop
2. A style applied to each item square.
3. Details, or "flair".

Here's why this structure is important to us: because we want our users to be able to tweak the themes. We want them to be able to customize the theme by uploading a different background image, selecting a different "style" for the item squares, turn the flair on or off and *voila*, they're set. The "flair" will be PNGS overlaid on top of the theme to make the it more immersive.

What exactly is an "item square"? Here's some examples:
pintrest: http://sht.tl/o3e
post-its: http://sht.tl/jnRR2

Please don't use these in your designs... I post them here as an example of what we mean by "item squares".

WHAT WE WANT TO SEE:

We want to see your idea for a new, better layout! And then we want to see you THEME IT with 4 different themes:

1) Black or White (mostly plain, but you may use patterns)
2) Remake our Awning theme. its the one that looks like this (). Its more of a a "traditional shop storefront", with the highlight being different backgrounds and awnings.
3) Something Handmade (think pa)
4) Surprise us! Pick whatever theme makes you feel good and go with it.

The layout/theme should be optimized for an 810px width, but it should be beautiful up to a 1620px width.

Thumbnail are 75x75px. They cannot be any larger than that, but you can make them slightly smaller if necessary.

All the elements need to fit, but we want the theme to feel open, not cramped.

Do you have additional requirements or links you want to share?

This is just the start. If your themes are beautiful, elegant, artsy, and easy to navigate.. we're going to want a *lot* more of them. Good luck!
