LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:

Independence is located in the Southeast corner of Kansas and has a population of 9,846. It was settled in 1869 by a band of men from Oswego, Kansas who wanted to become founders of a city. The 140 year old history of this town contains pioneer stories (Little House on the Prairie), oil magnets (Harry Sinclair), stately mansions, the first lighted baseball stadium, the first monkey to go into space (Ms. Able), a presidential candidate (Alf Landon), a Broadway playwright (William Inge), a movie star (Vivian Vance), and Neewollah, just to name a few.

Independence has a strong industrial base and consider ourselves to be, in part, a rural community with many farming sites in the area surrounding the City. Independence also has a historical downtown district and was named one of the first Main Street cities in Kansas.

The City of Independence has had a "Hometown Atmosphere" for many years and people who visit our community comment on the way they are treated by our citizens.

The City of Independence is a City Manager type of government. The City Manager Paul Sasse has served as City Manager for the past 32 years. The Governing Body is made up of the Mayor, Rick Mott and two Commissioners; Derrill Unruh and Tim White.

In addition to the Governing Body the City also has several other active boards: Airport Advisory Taskforce, Downtown Cultural Arts Taskforce, Historic Preservation/Certified Local Government, Independence Library Board of Trustees, Park Board, Planning Commission/Board of Zoning Appeals, Recreation Commission and Housing Authority.

The City has 139 full-time employees working in the following departments: Administration/Zoning, Municipal Court, Finance/Records, Police, Animal Control, Fire/Building, EMS, Engineering, Streets/Traffic, Park/Zoo, Cemetery, Memorial Hall, Airport, Water/Sewer and Sanitation.

The community has a 124 acre park and zoo. The zoo contains approximately 200 animal species. In addition to the zoo, the park contains a new aquatic center, new tennis courts, a miniature golf course, a miniature train and a merry-go-round which only cost 5 cents to ride. Riverside Park also contains one of the Sinclair Dinosaurs (Corythosaurus) that was featured at the 1964 World's Fair in New York. In addition the park has several park buildings which are available for rent. Additional park and zoo information can be found at www.forpaz.com.

In addition the City has recently renovated the Memorial Hall. The Memorial Hall building consist of a nearly 2000 seat auditorium with the latest computerized sound, lighting and stage rigging equipment, a large Civic Center suitable for large banquets, a large meeting room equipped with a ceiling mounted projector, built in audio and an automatic screen, plus several other smaller meeting rooms which are all available for rent. Pictures of past performances at Memorial Hall auditorium can be found at www.neewollah.com.

The Independence Housing Authority and the City are partnering to construct a new subdivision. Eisenhower Subdivision will consist of 28 new homes in which seven of the homes are completed and occupied and seven additional homes are currently being constructed. The homes are being sold to low and moderate income individuals. The City received a grant that is assisting with the infrastructure and construction costs of these homes.

The City also plans to construct a new water tower in the West Laurel Industrial park.
