LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:
I'm a Chicago-based business consultant trying to be a good citizen, who understands the US standard of living is in peril because not enough of us are graduating with degrees in engineering and science. The number of US engineering degrees peaked in the mid 1980s, since then the average yearly number of US degrees earned in parks and recreation studies has zoomed up 500%! People have been going into business as closet organizers, dog walkers, and personal chefs...variants on what once were considered servants' jobs. Compared with other countries, the US has been underproducing and overconsuming, one reason why we've run up so much debt! Here's what we really need, according to President Obama in his April 14 speech at Georgetown University:
"But you know what we can really use is some more scientists and some more engineers, who are building and making things that we can export to other countries."
Great start! Now where do we go from here?
HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:
A creative execution which will encourage middle school and high school students to take the challenging math and science courses which will allow them to succeed in college "STEM" majors (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). An execution which will motivate students (and, indirectly, their parents) to INSIST that local schools staff their math and science classrooms with highly qualified teachers.
As an alternative, a creative execution which will intrigue and motivate students to visit a website with information on pre-engineering programs to prepare middle and high school students for college engineering success.
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:
The highest achieving 50% of US students in grades 5-10, especially opinion leaders who do not themselves yet have a firm idea about their career orientation.
