LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:
Spencer Trask & Company is a private equity/venture fund that invests in big ideas from brilliant inventors long before the IPO stage.
A venture capitalist In the late 19th century, Spencer Trask financed Thomas Edison's invention of the light bulb, now the worldwide symbol of a great idea. When you add the founding of ConEdison, General Electric and the New York Times, you see an investor who's vision and bold action literally changed the world.
In the late 20th century, Spencer Trask & Co. has continued that tradition of big bets on big ideas, with dual goals of worth and worthiness driving its investments. We co-founded the first genomics company in Myriad Genetics, the first photonics company in Ciena, and the first company to develop an AIDS vaccine, The Immune Response Corporation.
Today in the 21st century, Spencer Trask & Co. continues to put money behind audacious ideas. Our active network includes Innocentive, which has been covered extensively for its world-changing results from crowdsourcing R&D; Prescient, which is testing a surgical tool that uses light waves to predict and polymer shields to prevent heart attacks; and Fastcase, which is an open source online compendium of case law that breaks the monopoly on legal information and pricing.
HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:
We need an edgy, attention getting signed graphic that will become iconic - -we will use it on t-shirts for our investors and entrepreneurs.
There are three elements that are must haves - - some representation of light waves, some representation of an unknown but immensely attractive/compelling future, and some representation of guts/ballsy-ness/chutzpah about being willing to make bets when no one else will.
And, the original Ciena logo...either standalone or incorporated...because that was the larget jackpot in history for its investors, and for us.
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:
The people wearing our t-shirt will be a wide variety of ages and sensibilities, but they will all have in common a love of risk, risk-takers and technology that changes our lives.
Future winners of our crowdsourcing competitions on Innocentive and other sites.
Entrepreneurs and Inventors in our network today and in the future.
Employees and Investors of Spencer Trask & Co.
WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:
The Dark Side of the Moon album cover is a good reference point for the iconic look we are after. The illustrations in Science, Nature and Wired. We don't like 60s and 70s hip and we do like color. Think CSI and early House episodes - -gritty but gripping.
WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:
Must have visuals that explode off the page, a clarity of message or intent and an unmistakeable reference to the power of light.
