IETF Companions

What do you do?

The IETF Companions are a group of people who travel with IETF meeting attendees. The IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) is an international organization of internet engineers that meet three times a year to work on the standards and protocols for the Internet. These meetings last a week, and some engineers bring their spouses, partners, families, and/or friends with them this group of friends or family members is referred to as IETF Companions.

A long-time and beloved tradition at IETF meetings is the unique t-shirt that each registered meeting attendees receives. The Companions, who are not registered meeting attendees, do not receive a t-shirt. This project the design of an IETF Companion t-shirt is designed to provide the Companions a distinctive t-shirt of their own.

The IETF Companion program is a very loose and informal group: Companions get together to tour the cities, see the sights, experience local flavors and cultures, and shop. The Companions are mostly (but not all) women and children. We get an average of 20 to 30 Companions each meeting. The Companions have gotten together to take cooking classes, to go to galleries, to have receptions. They are mostly self-organizing.

List the size requirement(s) for your clothing design

We are looking for a t-shirt design, both the front and back of the t-shirt. The design requirements are 10x10 maximum size for each side of the shirt. The file should be no more than 7MB. The e-shop recommends 24 bit PNG for best results printing on a dark colored t-shirt.

Describe the target audience for your clothing design

The target audience is the friends and family of the IETF community. They are creative, intelligent, and adventurous. They are knitters, bakers, writers, artists, musicians, parents and more they are an incredibly diverse group of people who enjoy travel and experiencing new cultures.

What 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your clothing design?

We plan to develop a new t-shirt annually. The 2014 Companion t-shirt should incorporate the following ideas:
1) Our three 2014 meeting locations (e.g. 2014 IETF World Tour) will be London, Toronto and Hawaii.
2) The Companions are a fun, adventurous and diverse group of people
3) The companions are all ages (and both genders)

Style and Concept

What clothing design styles do you like?

The Companions have indicated a preference for a dark t-shirt so the final design should look best on a dark background - black, navy blue, etc. We want there to be both a front and a back design.

How many colors should be used in the design?

The print shop can print full color on the t-shirt, so any and all necessary to make an incredible designed t-shirt.

What colors do you want to see in your clothing design?

Bold colors, such as purple, green, and red, etc.

What colors do you NOT want to see in your clothing design?

Prefer to avoid bright neon, yellow, and orange.

What adjectives should best describe your clothing design?

Multicultural, creative, colorful, exciting, adventurous.

How will you use the clothing design?

This t-shirt is going to be available for the companions to purchase at a print-on-demand e-shop. It will be available throughout 2014.

What must be included in the clothing design?

We must have IETF Companions and 2014. Wed like the names (or, alternatively, key architectural or cultural symbols) of the places well be this year which are: London, England; Toronto, Canada; and Honolulu, HI, USA. Visually, wed like the images that represent each of the three different destinations to come together into a cohesive, visually pleasing whole. Wed like the design to convey that these three destinations compose this years world tour for the IETF Companions.

Do you have additional info or links you'd like to share?

Specific elements, key architectural, or cultural symbols from the three cities we'll be traveling to this year (London, England; Toronto, Canada; and Honolulu, Hawaii, USA).
