What do you do?

We have a summer resort and conference center that is located in the Midwest (on Gull Lake Michigan near Kalamazoo and a short drive from Chicago, Detroit and Grand Rapids MI. Families come for a week of family vacation and receive 17 chef prepared meals, themed entertainment, kid and family programs and leisure activities, (plus Faith based inspirational speakers for the adults)

What is your industry?


Describe the target audience for your print design

The target audience is primarily (not exclusively) christian families with kids between the ages of infant and 18yrs. Needs to primarily attract the attention of Mom who is middle/upper class. The same type of family that would go to Disney World for a week and has a very busy life running kids to sports events and practices, involved in church activities, and has an overworked husband who is in upper management as a businessman or is a medical practitioner. (also we see grandparents signing up and doing this for there kids/grandkids)

What 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your print design?

1) Gull Lake Ministries is an important investment for the health of every christian family allowing them to get a break from the busy life they lead, spend time together without media/electronics and grow in their faith. (fyi, Gull Lake Ministries is non-denominational, meaning it is not tied to any particular type of church) Check out the first half of this video 2minutes to get a feel for what GLM does! http://vimeo.com/74915624

2) This place is a lot of fun, and has great staff that become "heroes" to the families, bend-over -backwards service, Chef prepared meals that are really good.

3) It is more than just a vacation destination

What print design styles do you like?

not the style that the current sample is in: (too 80's geometric)

What colors do you want to see in your print design?

Blues are always best since they convey the Gull LAKE aspect. It is a beautiful lake and we want to emphasize a week at the lake. Our logo colors are based around blues and can be adjusted to fit the piece.
We may print this on uncoated paper, but plan on all photos/edge effects, if appropriate, to have a spot varnish layer defined.

What colors do you NOT want to see in your print design?


What adjectives should best describe your print design?

anticipation, drawing you in to the story, resonates. The map should feel like an adventure that would be fun & refreshing for a family.

How will you use the print design?

We will take this design and incorporate this in with 12 more pages to create a comprehensive 1yr brochure that can be mailed to our constituents, placed in business establishments around the Midwest region in little brochure self-standing racks.

On the upper portion of the cover page please work up a small collage of photos from the General Facility Pics area: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/tkac1twdzu6y5... that shows families that this is a nice family resort for when the brochure is just sticking out of a rack someplace. and once it is removed the bottom portion captures their attention with the story of the family.

Bottom 2/3 of the page should tell the story of Matthew Schira (busy father of 3)

Photo pictures showing Matthew dreaming of a "happy place" while all around the dream is the reality of his busy life: Work photo, kids going to sports, etc. etc (work in a handful of photos from the front page photo section above)

This page pulls out (has a little tab that say pull and creates the large spread that is 22" wide) we want a reader to be able to follow the flow of a week at Gull Lake by following something like arrows or markings from one image to the next throughout the week so that guests have a better understanding of this being more than a "hotel/resort"
