Zvi Schreiber, Fizz book
What do you do?
Cover for a novel which tells the history of physics through an intriguing story about a young woman named Fizz who time travels
How many pages of print design do you need?
List the size requirement(s) for your print design
Book will be 6"x9" and cover should be 13.25" x 9.25" as follows:
Front 6x9, spine (to left) 1x9, back (to left) 6x9 (all side-by-side one one graphic) plus 1/8" bleed all around total 13.25" x 9.25". Leave 0.25" margin (in addition to bleed) with no critical content.
Bottom 2" of back page should be reserved for bar code and price.
What is your industry?
Published novel for books stores and electronic publishing targeted at general adult and young adult public especially those curious about science.
Describe the target audience for your print design
General public - the intelligent reader who has at most a latent interest in the science of our universe.
The cover should grab them and say here is a emotional and intellectual adventure which will take you through the history of physics in a fun and clear way (via a story about a young girl who time travels to meet the great physicists).
What 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your print design?
This is an intriguing emotional story about the adventures of an eighteen year old girl (named Fizz)
Fizz learns about the history of physics in a non-threatening way by personally meeting Galileo, Newton, Einstein
This is going to be a fun personal story with an intellectual experience weaved in
Style and Concept
What print design styles do you like?
Here is the cover of a successful book with similar genre (although I don't love it) :
Note that many readers will see the front cover only and they might see it in miniature on Amazon.com so the front cover must look good in small. The spine must stand out when book is on bookshelf.
Here are some random book covers that I like (not necessarily appropriate for this project but anyway)
What colors do you want to see in your print design?
Flexible but I do like burgundy. Strong eye-catching colors.
What colors do you NOT want to see in your print design?
What adjectives should best describe your print design?
Fresh. Intriguing. Strong.
How will you use the print design?
Cover on book in bookstore. Small version of front cover will appear on Amazon.com. Spine only will be visible when book is on book shelf.
What content must be included in the print design?
(Title) Fizz (can also be capitalized FIZZ - the name should become a recognizable brand)
(Subtitle) Nothing is as it seems
(Author) By Zvi Schreiber
(Description) A novel about the history of physics
(Title, subtitle and author should also appear vertically on the spine)
(Space for bar code and publisher bottom 2" of back cover)
Optional content (use some not all) :
- Image or silhouette of striking 18 year-old red-head girl
- Images of Galileo, Einstein, Newton
- Symbols of physics such as the planet Saturn, the symbol of an atom (for example the dot in the i in Fizz could be Saturn with its ring or the atom symbol with three ellipses) or images of a galaxy
- Symbols of time travel or the old world
- Day and night e.g. front could be day and back night
- Scientific instruments - e.g. an old-fashioned telescope (search for Galileo's telescope)
One idea would be Fizz (18 yr old red-head) face-to-face with Einstein in profile.
