Dear Mr. Holmes: Seven Holmes on the Range Mysteries is a collection of short stories set in the Old West. The stories revolve around Big Red and Old Red Amlingmeyer, cowboy brothers who attempt to solve mysteries using the methods of their hero, Sherlock Holmes. Holmes himself never appears: Everything the brothers know about him comes from reading magazine stories. The book is epistolary (all the stories take the form of letters written by Big Red), and the tone is frequently humorous. The first story in the collection is available here as a pdf: http://www.stevehockensmith.com/2011/03/...

Who are your readers?
My readers are evenly split between men and women, and most are Sherlock Holmes fans. The average age is somewhere in the vicinity of 50, though I'd like to appeal to all ages. Although the stories are set in the West and feature a lot of Western flavor, they are first and foremost mysteries, and that's the angle that usually hooks readers in.
What 3 things would you like to communicate to your readers with this design?
(1) This book has a strong Sherlockian connection.
(2) This books has a strong connection to the American West of the late 19th century (a.k.a. "the Wild West").
(3) This book is fun but it isn't a spoof or parody.
Style and Content
What colors do you want to see in your design?
I'm open to just about anything.
What colors do you NOT want to see in your design?
Pastels would be a tough sell.
Describe the style(s) you like (traditional, modern, etc.)
Old-fashioned 19th century fonts are O.K., but not a necessity. The designers who did the cover for the first and fifth Holmes on the Range novels did a nice job on that score:
