What do you do?
I have authored a book called Startup Balanced! It describes balances that must be struck in order for a startup business to be successful.
How many pages of print design do you need?
A front and back cover, one-sided. Inside flaps are not needed.
List the size requirement(s) for your print design
The book will be available in both paperback (via Create Space) and Kindle eBook formats.
The paperback version will be printed as a 5x8, 100 page book. Interior will be white pages with black and white text. Taking into account a .125 bleed on all sides and a .2252 spine width (.002252 spine multiplier x 100 pages): the entire PDF should be a minimum of 10.475 x 8.25. All text and images should be within the .125 trim. This will be a full-color, glossy cover. See the following page for how I calculated this: https://www.createspace.com/Products/Boo...
Because the book is less than 130 pages, Create Space recommends the spine be left blank. So please do not include any text on the spine.
Images may be CMYK or RGB color. All images should be sized at 100%, flattened to one layer and placed in the document at a minimum resolution of 300 DPI.
Please leave room for the ISBN barcode in a 2" by 1.2" white box in the lower right-hand corner of the book's back cover. To see exact placement of the barcode, go to the following link, select full color with bleed, 5x8, 100 pages: https://www.createspace.com/Help/Book/Ar...
Maximum accepted file size for the entire cover is 40MB (PDF).
For the kindle version of the book, please include a separate file with just the front cover. This should be 5 inches by 8 inches at 300 dpi. This one should be in JPG format.
In the final file package, please also include a copy of the cover that can be used on a website, business card, etc.
If you see something missing from the specifications, please contact me.
What is your industry?
Consulting & Professional Services
Describe the target audience for your print design
The target audience for the book will be typically younger professionals (20-30) who have started or are involved in the creation of a startup company. Older professionals, including those who consullt startup companies, may also purchase the book. Finally, it is possible the book could be used in an educational setting (in schools).
What 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your print design?
Three things to be communicated through the cover...
1. Balance/Harmony/Conscious Awareness -- As the topic of the book, the cover should also be balanced in its own way.
2. Breath-taking Creativity -- The reader should see the book on the shelf and say "Wow!" A large percentage of people will buy a book just because of the cover, so it should make a great first-impression.
3. Progressive / Forward-Thinking Startup Culture -- The cover shouldn't be too technological looking, but it should still pay homage to the evolving startup community -- those who are largely responsible for bringing the world out of a recession.
Style and Concept
What print design styles do you like?
The following are a few of my favorite book covers, which I believe are very well-done:
- "Switch" and "Made to Stick" by Chip and Dan Heath
- "Disciplined Dreaming" by Josh Linkner
- "The Lean Startup" by Eric Ries
- "The Method Method" by Eric Ryan
- "Fearless" by Max Lucado
What colors do you want to see in your print design?
My favorite colors are orange, blue and green -- although they need not all be used.
What colors do you NOT want to see in your print design?
I would prefer to stay away from purple, pink and very dark colors like black and dark gray.
What adjectives should best describe your print design?
Balanced, Innovative, Creative, Progressive
How will you use the print design?
This is being used as the cover for both a paperback and eBook.
What content must be included in the print design?
The front cover should include the name of the book: Startup Balanced! (exclamation point included) and the subtitle / sub-text: "the balances startups strike to succeed" (upper or lower-case as you see fit). It should also say "By Ryan S. Lilly"
On the back cover should be a photograph of the author and a biography (both attached). Please note that both an actual photo and a drawing of the author are attached. The designer may use either one or both, as you see fit. The website "www.StartupBalanced.com" should also be included. Finally, a space for a bar code (see above for details).
There should be no text on the spine, but it is OK if the design spills-over onto the spine and continues on the back.
