Creative brief

Business Name

Marcus Sorensen

What do you do?

I write books for people with entertaining anecdotes from my private practice as an energy healer and hypnotherapist. The likely audience is people with an interest in the evolution of consciousness, the meaning of life, death and the Universe, anywhere from 18 to 118 years old, both male and female.

How many pages of print design do you need?

2 in total: one cover for each of the two books in the series so far

List the size requirement(s) for your print design

The book size is 5.25 x 8 inches on the front.

Book 1 (Palimpsest) contains approx. 450 pages.
Book 2 (Imprint) contains approx. 250 pages.

Please design with suitable bleed for publishing via Createspace (.125" bleed) and supply in PhotoShop, format, including any unusual font faces used.

Spine: allow for 0.0625" variance on either side of the fold lines for the cover. For example, if the spine width is 1", the spine text should be no wider than 0.875". Because of this variance, avoid hard edges or lines that end on the fold line.

The Createspace publishing system will place an ISBN barcode in a 2" by 1.2" white box in the lower right-hand corner of each book's back cover. The standard trim size templates (included) will show you exact barcode placement.

What is your industry?

Describe the target audience for your print design

Spiritual, new age, contemporary religious people;
Hypnotherapists, energy healers, ministers, complementary therapists;
Sci-fi and fantasy fans;
Old hippies, new yogis;
Those seeking meaning in life.

What 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your print design?

I would like the book covers to communicate that :

- We are all part of a greater wholeness that comprises matter AND spirit. That wholeness is brilliant, colourful and soulful.

- In the first book in the series (called PALIMPSEST) the protagonist finds the woman of his dreams, his soulmate, and then witnesses her die in a tragic accident. The book contains their correspondence, and the letters he continues to write to her after her passing, documenting his grief and the journeys he takes to find a connection to her again, now in spirit instead of in matter. He comes to realise that they had spent many lives together, and will never really be apart. They are twin flames travelling together through time. It is a story of Two being One.

- The protagonist of the second book in the series (called IMPRINT) takes imprints of experiences that he has and witnesses in material and spiritual worlds (using sight, sound, smell, taste and touch) and he conveys them to others for healing, learning and growth. In his spirit life, he also moves between dimensions while doing this, meeting various aspects of himself that are more and more evolved. In his life on Earth, he works as an energy healer and hypnotherapist who guides clients through their past lifetimes, and helps them contact their own more evolved spiritual selves. It is a story of All being One.

What print design styles do you like?

In the lightbox, the main graphics ideas for the covers are shown.
The image with three horizontal strips with floral design show how I would like the book covers in the series to work together, with a strong central graphic idea that is adapted to each book's particular spin. Each book has a name that means something quite visual:

Book 1: Palimpsest (a manuscript or piece of writing material on which later writing has been superimposed on effaced earlier writing; something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form - which is how I conceive of the soul)

Book 2: Imprint (a mark or outline made by pressing something on to a softer substance - the protagonist takes imprints of experiences by "pressing" them in to his soul, and transmits them on from there)

The inside of the book is formatted with the Balance layout style shown here:

The fonts do not need to match those used in this layout template, but a smooth transition from outside to inside would be good.

What colors do you want to see in your print design?

A background of white most likely, but open to other colours if well-balanced with the typography and images.
Splashes of colour to show the rainbow of spirituality.
Each book should have its own MAIN colour(s) and look great standing next to the other books in the series on a bookshelf. If the spines could start to build an independent image between them as the series evolves, that would be even more clever, where one somehow flows into the other.

What colors do you NOT want to see in your print design?

Very dull ones. The idea is to have a bright, though carefully balanced, visual appearance, but NOT to overwhelm the viewer or look like a children's playground!

What adjectives should best describe your print design?

Architectural / Notion of a Grid that underlines all of Reality and keeps it flowing together

How will you use the print design?

I will use these two for the covers of the first two books in the series, and commission further covers for the forthcoming books that will follow, based on the same design direction. The books will be distributed in both print and digital format.

What content must be included in the print design?

(could be written in a variety of superimposed font faces, or in other ways made to look like it is somehow a palimpsest on the page)

Soul Lessons in Love
(this is the subtitle)

(could be made to look somehow imprinted on the page, or into other shapes, or with lots of shapes and colours inside the word)

An Apprenticeship of the Soul
(this is the subtitle)

Space for synopsis text (TBC - "Lorem ipsum" of around 100 words would be fine)
Space for 2 short reviews (TBC - "Lorem ipsum" of up to 20 words would be fine)
If possible, an interesting incorporation in the design of the ISBN barcode placement, but this is not required if it would negatively affect the design.

Brief updates

By marcusbs on 1-Dec-13 1:59 a.m. GMT
The book entitled IMPRINT has 265 pages once uploaded at Createspace.

The book entitled PALIMPSEST has between 450 and 500 pages. This will be confirmed upon award of the project.
By marcusbs on 1-Dec-13 2:35 a.m. GMT
Here is more information for the BACK COVER of both books.

The following short text about the author should be displayed:

"Marcus B. Sorensen was born in 1977 in Denmark in this lifetime, and has since wandered and explored most of Earth’s continents, along with many varied professions.

He currently lives in London and writes stories of musings from his travels,
his energy healing practice and
his regression hypnotherapy practice.

And yes, he is an imprinter."

I am uploading a photo which can be cropped and used to show the author if such a photo would work well in the overall design. It is not compulsory to include if it does not work visually on the back cover.

Here is a list of book cover images that I enjoy, with short explanations for each one:
For simplicity, elegance and cleverness of the image that carries the book title within.
Again simplicity, clarity and cleverness of translating the book title into graphics
Attention-grabbing, colourful, strong (though not very subtle!)
Simple, elegant, again shows the book's title within the graphical idea
Quite otherworldly, unusual, strong, thought-provoking
Very strong title typography, elegant, detailed, clear and clever
Again the title interprets the book subject matter succinctly and cleverly
Clean, interesting, good translation of the title into graphics
Very strong, though very dark.
Nice integration of the photo seamlessly onto the page with the typography
