A book cover design for a novel targeting 8-12 year old boys. Vintage feel.

Update 1-Oct-13 GMT
These elements don't have to be included, but perhaps they'll inspire something:

Mac rides a bicycle (an old school black schwinn from the early 1940s)
Mac has a dog (black lab) named scout.
Mac and William play baseball in a sandlot.
Mac's brother is a fighter pilot in the Pacific.

Here's a synopsis of the book.
"Mac Mason’s story takes place in 1943 on the home front during World War II. Fourteen-year-old Mac feels overshadowed when his athletic British cousin William comes to California to escape the London bombings. Yet, when the two uncover clues to a fraudulent rations ring, they must work together to save a friend from being falsely accused. It’s a great story about ego, loss, teamwork, fear, empathy and adventure. The book is for middle grade readers, ages 8-12."

Dear Designers,
We are extending the time frame for this project. Our hope is to have time to see more revisions. If you are willing, it would be great if you could take a look at some WWII vintage propaganda posters (American). In general, we'd like to see a greater vintage feeling for this cover.
Thank you so much for all your work! We can't wait to see what you do next.

A few updates to this creative brief. We've learned a lot from looking at your wonderful designs!
- The title of the book will remain simply "The Adventures of Mac Mason." You can remove Home Front from your design.
- We still want to have 1943 denoted.
- Book 1 ... this is the first book in the series, so we'd like Book 1 to be obvious.
- We prefer designs where the artist has created the image themselves. You don't need to create a new font, but if the images are your own, we tend to prefer that.
Thank you very much for all your work.
