Community & Non-Profit
About Your Company
We support military veterans and their families with a range of services, helping them on their path to community reintegration so they can build happy, healthy, and meaningful lives.
Primary audience is donors, both individuals and organizations interested in supporting American veterans who are struggling to adjust to civilian life. This group skews a little older (35 and up). We are regional but plan to expand.
"We are here for their first step, and each step that follows. Because we believe that every warrior should have a positive future to look forward to. There’s always another goal to achieve, another mission to discover. We are their partner in that mission."
In 1974, Swords to Plowshares started with a single grant and a small location on Valencia Street. Now, over 40 years later with an annual budget of $19 million, we are still doing the same thing we set out to do — heal the wounds of war, restore dignity, hope, and self-sufficiency to all veterans in need, and to prevent and end homelessness and poverty among veterans.
Veterans Community Project was founded by a group of combat veterans in Kansas City, Missouri who resolved to stand in the gaps of a broken system that left too many of their brothers and sisters behind.

The Ancient Greek word "Nostos" described a returning warrior's journey home, both physically and spiritually. It literally translates to "a return to light and life." That's very on-the-nose for who we are and what we do. Unlike many veteran orgs who focus on 1-2 areas or services, we offer a range of supportive services including case management, counseling, financial assistance, housing locator support, rehab programs, female veteran programs, employment training and job placement...and we even develop brand new apartments and homes for vets. We have a sister nonprofit, Veterans Housing Development Corporation (www.housingvets.org) that we may combine as one brand. Other names/ themes we like that represent our mission and identity are North Star, Project Lighthouse...guiding vets on a journey of rediscovery, helping them find "home," whatever that may mean to them individually. Although we only serve vets and half our employees are vets, we don't want to wrap ourselves in the flag. Preferably no acronyms for names.
