What does your company do?

We are Ashoka Changemakers and Sage Bionetworks.
Sage Bionetworks is a nonprofit biomedical research organization created to revolutionize how researchers approach the complexity of human biological information and the treatment of disease. Sage Bionetworks brings the core scientific knowledge around building models of disease and the creation of a transparent platform for evolving models of disease. Sage Bionetworks mission statement includes: "to create an open access, integrative bionetworks evolved by contributor scientists working to eliminate human disease." Sage has designed and built an IT infrastructure called Synapse which can, 1) store clinical and genomic data in the Amazon cloud, 2) provide mathematical tools to find statistical correlations and build probabilistic bionetwork models of disease, and 3) host representations of these models of disease in an open way such that multiple investigators can team together to solve their problems in real time with versioning and annotations capable of providing recognition, transparency, and accountability.
Ashoka Changemakers is a global online community that supports everyones ability to be a changemaker by inspiring, mentoring, and collaborating with other members of the community at every level of changemaking. Changemakers provides experience and expertise in designing and administering over collaborative competitions and in creating a transparent, accountable information technology platform to support a robust social innovation value chain.

Citizens/Patients: Provide an interconnected community of citizen scientists collaborating to advance knowledge and hold researchers accountable for sharing data, methods and results to accelerate discovery.

Researchers: Catalyze joint understanding of biology by a cadre of the best researchers willing to work on a real-time collaborative platform and provide opportunities to collaborate within and across diseases with more focus on patient priorities

Investors/Universities: Develop a transparent and accountable mechanism to source and vet innovative research projects where researchers are accountable to deliver results and make their work open and reusable.

What 3 things do you want your company name to communicate to your customers?

Were democratizing medical research. Were breaking out of the classical roles for patients, researchers, and funders in order to build better models of disease. This platform gives everyone an important role to play.

Patients make this possible. Were helping patients move beyond being passive recipients to becoming participants able to share clinical details, suggest problems worth solving, and track how and where their data is helping research.

The one-stop shop for disease models. Were offering a user-friendly bridge to Sage Bionetworks Synapse. This platform extends the functionality of other patient communities in a user-friendly, non-restrictive, transparent manner. Were a central disseminator of information for all interested patients, researchers, and investors.

We dont have any direct competitors, but we will partner with a variety of similar organizations. For branding purposes, some of their names include: PatientsLikeMe, 23andMe, Google Health, J Michael Fox.

Style and Concept

What character, tenor, or spirit do you wish to convey?

Because were engaging multiple patient and disease communities, we need to be perceived as both prestigious and welcoming at the same time. We strive to be open, transparent and collaborative in all our interactions. Were serious, well-qualified (backed by a leading biomedical organization, Sage Bionetworks) and well-connected, but accessible and inviting of everyone who wants to help tackle todays diseases.

Are there any words or phrases you especially like or hate?

Please avoid: Greek/Latin roots; the word platform; names that emphasis biology/technology in various ways; silly sounding names that are just fun to say (think Silicon Valley tech start-ups). These are all overused in the medical and tech fields.

We also prefer that our two brands, Ashoka Changemakers and Sage Bionetworks, not be used.

We would like to explore evocative names that are short, memorable, and generate emotional responses in our audience of patients, communities, funders, policy makers, and scientists. Were going for a name that resonates with the positioning of the brand on an emotional level, not a descriptive one.
