Creative brief

What do you do?

Federal Job Search Pro is an iPhone application for searching for jobs in the US federal government. It provides a clean, highly usable, professional looking interface for job searchers, allowing them to search for US government jobs when they're not in front of a computer.

Business Name

Federal Job Search Pro

What is your industry?

Mobile government job search

Describe the target audience for your icon design

The target audience is a professional government worker looking for their next job. Consider target ages 18-45.

Because this is an app for searching for federal jobs, a patriotic theme is very natural and acceptable choice. The design should definitely feel "American", but at the same time, needs to feel professional. Try not to go too overboard on the red, white and blue, flags, eagles, etc, but incorporating some of that is fine.

What 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your icon design?

#1 - Quality: This app is competing mainly on being a better built, higher quality app than the competitors (which are buggy and poorly designed). The icon is a huge, huge piece in communicating this to a prospective buyer, so your work is SUPER important.

#2 - Simplicity - The app is designed to be a simpler alternative to related apps. This doesn't necessarily mean the icon needs to be visually simple. However, it must communicate a very strong single concept.

#3 - Clever - A clever icon design that really catches the eye and makes you do a double take will go a long way in communicating the above two qualities, and thus differentiate the app from competitors. See the attached examples for some icons I think are clever.

How many different icons do you need designed?

I just need one icon.

Do you have specific size requirements for the icons?

This is a standard iphone app icon. So I need:

What icon design styles do you like?

What colors do you want to see in your icon design?

Because this is a an app that focuses on jobs for the US government, red white and blue is a natural (but not required) choice. If you do go this route, make sure you keep it classy - we're not going for an over-the-top, 4th of july theme:)

What colors do you NOT want to see in your icon design?

Nothing is off limits, at least as far as I can think of:)

What adjectives should best describe your icon design?

American, elegant, simple, professional, clever, striking, optimistic, hopeful

Do you have additional requirements or links you'd like to share?

Attached are the current mocks for the app. Please don't feel constrained by these mocks - it's ok if the icon doesn't match the mocks. They're just here for your reference.

Brief updates

Just a quick update. I see a lot of icons with text/words/letters in them. I really prefer icons without those, that have a strong enough concept that you can communicate it without any text. In addition, keep in mind that the normal size for this icon is 57x57, so lots of text and detail won't show up very well.

Sorry for the delay in choosing a winner. There's been so many good designs, it's been a hard decision. I'll have a decision made in the next day or two.
