What do you do?

XS is a mobile app for sports highlights (photos and videos) that targets not just mainstream sports like football and basketball, but also action/extreme sports like skiing, motocross, surfing, aviation, skydiving, etc. We're building a community for users to share content and discover trending content that relates to their sports interests.

The XS name stands for extreme sports, but will also refer to things like excess talent, excess merchandise (when we decide to sell merchandise in the app), excess lifestyle, etc.

Our target audience will largely be young males (under 25 or 30) with a passion for anything sports. They'll have enough disposable income to spend on their favorite sports hobbies, and free time to surf through our application to see the hottest trending sports content on the web.

The app design and logo should be energetic, young, edgy, snappy, raw. If you saw the logo on a t-shirt or other merchandise, you would want to wear it because it represents who you are as a person and athlete.

What 3 things do you want to communicate to your audience through your app?

The app needs to have a progressive, youthful, edgy feel. It needs to be different and trendy enough to draw the user back on the strength of the content but also the interface. XS needs to be the go-to place for the hottest, trending sports-related content. We need to set ourselves apart from competitors like ESPN, RedBull, and GoPro. The initial success of the app, especially for a first time user, will largely be based on the designs. We need to stand out from the pack, even if it means trying something a little risky. You'll win this project if you give us a real shock of "wow" when opening the screens - going with something safe or that we've seen before won't inspire us or our users.

How many app screens do you need designed?

For this requirement, we'll need 3-5 screens to be designed. If we like the quality and feel of the designs, we have an additional 40 screens that need to be designed, in addition to a public website. Given the materials we receive, this could be a much bigger project for the winning designer.

Do your app designs need to be a particular size?

The designs must be sized for the iPhone 4, 4S, and 5.

What mobile app styles do you like?

Sidewalk, Instagram, Pixable, Flipboard, Feedly

What colors do you want to see in your mobile app design?

There aren't any "must have" colors - some are harder than others to work with (like orange, yellow) - but as long as it fits the description, we're ok with it.

What colors do you NOT want to see in your mobile app design?

No colors are totally out of the question. Orange and yellow are hard to work with, blue is a bit overdone (Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Instagram, Box, Dropbox, etc.).

What adjectives should best describe your app design?

Youthful, sporty, fun, edgy, risky, raw, energetic, progressive, different, outside-the-box, etc.
