Kids books. We're targeting parents who are tech savvy, who want to have a personalized reading experience for their children wherever they are in the world via their iPad, Kindle or Android tablet.
What 3 things do you want to communicate to your audience through your app?
1) The ebooks are personal & truly unique 2) That the ebooks look great on a mobile device 3) That creating the personalized ebook is fast & easy
How many app screens do you need designed?
The first design is for the home page of our mobile site. The design should be modular, almost like a template, so that if we want to create variations of the design for the purposes of A/B testing, it should be easy to do (e.g. changing a title, changing button text).
This page has to incorporate the following elements: - A sign in link - A link to a the regular website - A big call-to-action button - Obvious title text or header text - Our logo
The second design should be a bookshelf view of all of our books. Take a look at the library screen in iBooks on the iPad for an example. Both screens should be designed with the potential for either orientation of the mobile device (portrait and landscape)
Do your app designs need to be a particular size?
The design should be a responsive design that will fit an iPad, Kindle Fire or Android (Galaxy tablet) without any scrolling. It should also take into consideration the different orientations a user might be using (portrait vs. landscape).
Does NOT need to work nicely with mobile phones.
What mobile app styles do you like?
We want to feature a picture of a device displaying our books and showing how beautiful they look on a mobile device. We want big buttons that have texture to them so you feel enticed to push them. Big, easy to read text, not too much text though.
What colors do you want to see in your mobile app design?
Light blue is good as that's the colour of our logo (littleheroes.com). But we're open to anything.

There are a few entries that are getting close but not quite "there" yet. With many of these entries being posted late, we were unable to provide feedback in time for further iteration. As such we are extending the deadline to do so.

ADDITIONAL DESIGN BRIEF DETAILS:
1. Flexible (modular) and intuitive design The design needs to be modular and/or based around a 'grid' to enable easy adaptation to various tablet screen sizes. It also needs to accomodate (1) vertical/portrait and (2) horizontal/landscape orientation for BOTH the home and bookshelf view. This means that any backgrounds or elements used, need to be able to be easily rotated / adjusted* between the two views.
*Elements can be dynamically resized to fit design orientation.
Designs also need to be intuitive. Mobile sites are accessible from devices where swiping, pinch zooms etc are the norm. Avoid where possible the standard web navigation of "buttons" and "arrows". Use deisgn to encourage swipe scrolling and tap selections.
2. Clean, sophisticated "kids" look-and-feel While there is no colour restrictions, avoid any colour palettes that are too vivid and primary in style. I.e. Less 'Legoland", more "Apple" or "Pixar" for kids. We like simplicity and 'white space' concepts. Our books aren't cheap and of high quality and the designs need to reflect that.
Colours and overall design MUST NOT compete with (1) product/product use images, (2) body copy and (3) core "call-to-action button". The visual focus must be on these three elements. There is no restriction on how this is created, i.e. via colour intensity, white/blank space etc.
Use of an illustrated background is fine, but avoid: (1) Using the current Little Heroes web background (to be binned), and (2) Interfering/competing with the main elements (see above).
3. Consistent use and colour of fonts Fonts use must be consistent and within the same font family (or design compatible). Readability is KEY. Overall guideline: go classic vs. "kid"/"cartoon". Preferred text font families are Arial, Helvetica or Myriad Pro (alternative: Lucida Grande). More elaborate fonts may be used sparingly for design elements.
Align fonts and colours to "roles". E.g. Header, sub header are #000000 and body copy #707070. This way the brain is visually cued what goes together and relative importance. Avoid a rainbow of colours.
4.Visual hierachy and design of "buttons" There are several action links (sign-in, visit main website, buy/create a book etc) on each screen. These are not of equal importance and the "button" design must reflect this. The core focus buttons are: (1) Home: "Buy / Create a book" (2) Bookshelf: Everything else is secondary and can be relegated to text / small / muted coloured buttons.
Core buttons need to be big and clear. Keep it simple with limited text. Please align button size to the overall design (i.e. not so big, it becomes unbalanced). When in doubt, go classic in design than unusual shapes. Unusual may look awesome, but it confuses users who respond better to standard visual cues.
