LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:

We are a group of Vietnam combat veterans who have established a memorial scholarship fund to honor the deaths of 196 of our brothers who lost their lives in Vietnam. Each year, we grant scholarships of up to $1,000 to descendants of soldiers who served in our unit, the 2nd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment. Since forming in 2005, we have raised nearly $35,000 and awarded numerous scholarships to children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives of our veterans.

We can think of no better way to honor the sacrifice of our fallen brothers, who were taken in the springtime of their lives, than to help a young person get an education. We believe that a better educated world is a world that will work harder towards establishing peace so that future generations do not have to endure the horror of war that we experienced firsthand. No one earnestly seeks peace more than veterans, and the outpouring of support we've experienced for our scholarship foundation has been heartfelt and humbling.

The loss of our comrades 40 years ago is no less painful to us today than it was heartbreaking then, and we understand the healing power of love and connection across all countries and cultures.

100% of contributions go towards funding the scholarships - all administrative costs are donated by our all-volunteer foundation board and scholarship committee (including the cost of this logo). We are proud of what we are doing in our own small but important way, and want to reach out to a wider group of contributors than we currently have (which is comprised almost exclusively of Vietnam veterans). We intend to create a website and need a professionally designed logo as the centerpiece of our home page.

We have been formally granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS as a non-profit charitable organization.

HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:

A professionally designed logo for our planned website. We do some limited print materials but plan to make wider use of a website when it is up and running. We do not need a logo for letterhead, envelopes, etc., just mostly for our website.

OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:

Our primary audience currently is Vietnam veterans, but our intent is to make the scholarship foundation perpetual so that scholarship awards can be made even years from now when we are gone. In that respect, we need to have a logo that will appeal to not only to veterans but to the general public who contributes to worthy causes.

We DO want the focus on the foundation to be positive, that is, to play up the charitable aspect of the foundation and the benefits of the scholarships we award to young people every year. We do NOT want to perpetuate the incorrect stereotype of the drugged-up, homeless, violent Vietnam veteran, because that is not who we are or what we are striving for.

We do want, however, to be sure that the purpose of this foundation - to honor the memory of the 196 brave soldiers who were killed in Vietnam - is somehow evoked by the logo in a respectful manner.

WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:

We have no preconceived ideas as to what the design should look like or what colors should be incorporated. All creative approaches are welcomed to the extent they are respectful of the essential nature of the scholarship foundation and its purpose.

WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:

We know that the lengthy, unwieldy name of the foundation will pose a challenge to developing an effective logo with the punch we're looking for. The three primary elements to focus on are:

1. 2nd Battalion (can be abbreviated to "2nd Bn")

2. 47th Infantry Regiment (can be abbreviated to "47th Inf Reg")

3. Memorial Scholarship Foundation

Secondary elements include:

1. Vietnam Veterans

2. 9th Infantry Division (can be abbreviated to "9th Div")

There is a 47th Infantry Regiment crest (you can Google it) but I am not convinced that it is necessary or appropriate to have it incorporated into our logo.
