LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:

The Software Sustainability Institute (SSI) brings together experts on software engineering, project management and dissemination from three leading UK universities. These experts work with researchers from universities across the UK and help them to improve the sustainability of their software by providing the expertise, skills and information needed to overcome the problems and pitfalls that affect software developed for research (see below).

Our temporary website is here: www.software.ac.uk.

Academic researchers from all fields (the sciences, the arts and humanities, languages, medicine, etc.) use and develop software to help conduct their research, but:

Researchers generally do not have the software engineering skills to develop software that is easy to understand and easy to keep up to date

Researchers generally do not have the means or expertise to distribute their software to other researchers that might benefit from its use

When funding runs out, researchers move onto other projects and the software they have developed is left behind to decay

HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:

We need a world-leading logo for a world-leading software organisation!

We want to distinguish ourselves from these organisations that work in a similar field:

Software Engineering Institute: http://www.sei.cmu.edu

The National Grid Service: www.ngs.ac.uk

The National eScience Centre: www.nesc.ac.uk

The Digital Curation Centre: www.dcc.ac.uk

The Oxford e-Research Centre: www.oerc.ox.ac.uk

The White Rose Grid: www.wrgrid.org.uk

Open Source Software Watch: www.oss-watch.ac.uk

STFC e-Science Centre: www.e-science.stfc.ac.uk

Open Science Grid: www.opensciencegrid.org

European Grid Initiative: egi.eu/

OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:

In general, our audience is well educated, technology-savvy, and predominantly aged from mid-twenties to fifties. Our audience are generally active in the field of open-source software, and as such can be cynical of obvious corporate symbolism.

WE LIKE THESE EXAMPLES:

We haven't seen any logos that we like yet, but we'll add them here if we find any.

WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE THIS IN OUR PIECE:

The logo:

Will incorporate the name Software Sustainability Institute or the abbreviation SSI

Will reflect the main aspect of the SSI which is 'Sustainability' (as defined by the quality of meeting the demands of the future, NOT environmental sustainabilty)

May also reflect other aspects of the SSI:

Software: ground-breaking software developed to study some of the big problems faced by researchers

Collaboration: working with others, understanding their needs and delivering them

Research: cutting-edge research performed by researchers from all disciplines

Will preferably include the web address: www.software.ac.uk or software.ac.uk or will be designed so that the logo can be shown with or without the web address

Will be multi-purpose to allow its use in different media. Specifically, websites, print media, powerpoints and posters. For this reason, the logo should have a similar width and height, or should have a graphical element of similar width and height that can be used on its own.

Will use red as the predominant logo colour to distinguish ourselves from competitors who mainly use blue and environmental sustainability, which has a preponderance for green
