We work in the professional credentialing industry (e.g. medical board examinations, dental board examinations, lawyers, nurses, etc.) and our product tests their skills. It is the final capstone of their professional training prior to becoming an independant practitioner.
We often use the "Coin Sorter Metaphor" - The job of a coin sorter is to make sure that coins are identified properly by their value and appropriately sorted so that stacks of coins can be trusted to be accurate. A bad coin sorter is one that frequently allows a coin to fall in the wrong slot. A nickel among the quarters, a dime lumped in with the pennies. The more accurately the coin sorter does its job the higher the degree of trust in the results. Similarly, the credentials offered by a credentialing organization grow in value and trust the more accurately they are bestowed. If an organization often gives a credential to people who fall short of the requirements of that credential, be those requirements in the form of knowledge, course work, demonstrable skills, and/or prerequisites, then the credentialing organization's brand will decline and the trust among their constituents (members of their industry, the general public, peer organizations, vendors, clients, etc.) will decline. If trust and reputation of a credential decline then the credential loses value and meaning.
In many ways we serve these organizations by helping them to be more accurate coin sorters. The tools and systems we create benefit the credentialing organization, by streamlining processes, eliminating risks and error prone batch processes, and perhaps most importantly, introducing real-time updating -- actionable information that allows for intervention. In a sense allowing the organization to intervene before a coin falls in the wrong slot, or before a candidate can slip through the cracks in the system to either be lost in the bureaucracy, or worse, receive an unearned credential.
We named the product Crucible because we put candidates AND examiners to the test. We make sure candidates deserve credentials and examiners are making good/accurate judgements about the candidates.
