LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:
News21, an alliance of 12 graduate journalism schools. asks top students to do innovative journalism of substance. News21 is part of the larger Carnegie-Knight Initiative for the Future of Journalism Education.
Knight has laid out our mission: Do something with 50+ investigative reporters/staffers that no one else can do and tap the genius of universities to tell this know-it-all nation a big something that it doesn't know but damn well needs to know and to do that in totally unexpected ways, innovative ways that get the attention of a news industry desperate to understand its own place in America's future.
News21, now in its fourth, grows from 5 schools to 12. In the first 3 years, News21 comprised 4 incubators. Now we have 8. And weve grown from 44 students to 93. Earlier, students worked on specific topics (national security in 2006, religion in '07 and politics in
'08). Through 2011, we'll investigate stories of a changing nation through demographics and rich media. Here are the arenas of exploration for this summer:
Arizona State: The Latino Experience Across America
Berkeley: Urban Reporting, Demographics and the American Tapestry
Columbia: U.S. Charter Schools: Exploring Cultural, Linguistic & Immigrant Challenges
Maryland: The U.S. Political Landscape: Racial Identity and Attitudes
North Carolina: Changing America: Population and Energy Use
Northwestern: Urban Youth and the New America
Southern California: Southwestern Shifts: New Communities and New Realities
Syracuse: Teen America: Technology, Identity and Next-Gen Empowerment
Our News21.com homepage will feature content and rotate content from the 8 incubator schools. Their particular work will reside on their subsections (i.e., usc.news21.com). Students engage in their topics at news21.ning.com
If we had a slogan, it might be: News21: Next-Gen Journalists Explore a Changing Nation
HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:
Our News21.com homepage will feature and rotate content from each of the above 8 incubators. Each school will showcase its content on its subsection, which will sport a global nav header and footer. This logo will appear atop all of our pages, which will cover a range of topics and journalistic approaches. On our current site, at news21.com, 3 of the schools carry a similar look and feel; the USC page is very different, and, given our new branding effort, serves as an example of a page that would need to carry the global nav and logo.
On the homepage, our logo may appear bigger; on the subpages, it might be smaller and adaptable to various web-safe color schemes.
We are amenable to a brand of both News21 (no space) or New21.com or both.
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:
People intrigued by the content our students cover
Fans of journalism interested in new approaches to content
WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:
These links are shared because of a narrow logo via horizontal nav:
The liquid approach to this global nav
A narrow version like this?
Our nav will acknowledge our funders as this site does
This isite is greatly admired for nav & presentation and subtle logo
WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:
We favor narrow horizontal nav because while we need an imprint that tells users who we are, we don't want to take away from the main journalistic focus.
We need a logo that reflects us: At our core, News21 showcases change, leadership, bold ideas, innovation, collaboration, future legacies, integrity, substance, extendable approaches Our journalism is vibrant, strong, innovative, substantive, hopefully important, relevant, impactful
We would like a logo that would be versatile, ably scaling and working atop a page, on the homepage and on a business card. It will be used in proximity to the longish name of our sponsoring organizations. Our logo will embolden our presence on Facebook, iTunes, YouTube, etc.
Were also amenable to an ongoing relationship with an all-star who might help us design more features of our site.
The files attached are VERY ROUGH mockups that may help you (I hope they don't shape your creativity too much, because we're not wedded to these...)
