LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:
We are the first social news site for New York City. Much like Reddit or Digg, users on our site can share links and rate the ones they like best up to the front. A post from the most unknown blog can end up on the front page along with one written by a reporter at the New York Times. The site further lowers the barrier to entry for community and civic journalism by allowing anyone to post a story--reported or otherwise--and watch it move towards the front page.

HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:
We need a mascot. She needs to be hip yet kinda silly--something that makes the site feel like more of a community. She needs to come with a happy face and a disgruntled face (the latter would show up, for instance, along with a "page not found error.")
Please go to our site (www.nyc.is) and look at our current header. We don't want to change this much, so we'd want the mascot to come in a small form that could be incorporated into this design. It would be especially cool if you could have her peeking over the "NYC.IS" towards the stories. The color scheme would also of course have to fit with our current site.
In addition to the header the mascot would show up in different sizes on other pages throughout the website.
Again, check us out at www.nyc.is.
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:
New Yorkers and people who want to identify with New York.
WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:
The Reddit alien and the Digg shovel man are obvious examples. The mascot should be as simple as these in its design.
WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:
We are imagining the Statue of Liberty as our mascot. We want membership and self-promotion on our site to be seen as something worth doing, so we want our Lady Liberty to be pretty hip. Think NYC Hipster meets Statue of Liberty. She should be in some sort of action pose that is not the usual, standing straight with torch above head, business. As mentioned above, it'd be cool if in one version she was peaking over the site's name at the top five stories.
That said, you can do whatever you'd like as long as it is an obvious symbol of NYC.
