LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:
Established in 2003, Artists & Fleas (www.artistsandfleas.com) is a Williamsburg, Brooklyn-based independent year-round artist & designer & collector market that features the works of local New York City talent. We have a large warehouse that is open on weekends only and becomes part fair, part hang-out for hundreds of local buyers and sellers - with some vendors who are more permanent than others.
We are seeking to revitalize our brand and create a visual identity that is more consistent with our business vision and our market reality. We want something that does not look or feel dated or locks us into a specific genre or style. If anything, EVERY style needs to feel at home under the Artists & Fleas umbrella. And, most importantly, since we are speaking to a target audience that "gets" design, we need to be worthy of that audience, credible and relevant.
We want to refresh our brand so that it lives as a parent brand at home with brand extensions as well as other associations (sponsorships, partnerships, affiliations). We want to develop a logo that could work as well if it were to have other properties associated with it - for example, "Artists & Fleas Indoor Market" or "Artists & Fleas Vintage Market" - as well as possible geographic extensions (Artists & Fleas Denver) or "XYZ...presented by Artists & Fleas."
We facilitate interaction. We bring people to the market and bring the market to the people. We encourage entrepreneurship, celebrate creativity and seek to cultivate the opportunity for entrepreneurs to share with each other, make things happen and make money selling their art.
HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:
We need a logo. It will be used on our website, on our flyers/postcards/posters, and on our street signage and market front.
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:
Our target is the community of independent artists, designers, collectors, DIYers and the general community of people/individuals who have a desire to explore their creative or cool-hunting side and participate in a vibrant, dynamic physical wkend market to get in front of consumers and sell their merch. Our secondary target is the consumer market - those people who are looking for a cool place to find works from local artists & designers.
So while we are focused on a "business" audience, this audience is really people like you who are entreprising entrepreneurs, creative-minded with a passion and a flair for doing your own thing.
WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:
We like simple typefaces but want something that is still ownable and/or unique enough that it would elicit a "wow, that looks really nice" reaction from a graphic designer who might set up shop at the market.
We believe that the "&" in our logo could allow for some more creativity but are not married to it and would also welcome explorations that modify it to the word "and".
We like Herman Miller (www.hermanmiller.com), JetBlue (www.jetblue.com and their Terminal 5 brand experience at JFK airport) and Mucca Design (www.muccadesign.com and even like the hand-drawn approach they took to logos for Schiller's Liquors and La Condesa even though those logos/lock-ups look a bit "vintage.")
We don't like things that look or feel dated. Things that are too groovy such as MUD Coffee (www.themudtruck.com) or trying too hard to connect with an audience.
We don't like things that look contrived.
We don't like super intricate drawings or highly stylized fonts that make it hard to replicate the logo or make your head spin.
We're more than happy to address specific questions via email as needed to help bring more focus to this project.
WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:
It must say:
