Torngat Metals is a newly formed Canadian rare earth metals mining company with mining properties in the foothills of the famous Torngat mountains at the northern tip of Newfoundland and Labrador and eastern Quebec. Not only is Torngat operating within Canadian regulatory jurisdictions, but Torngat’s business strategy and operating principles are anchored in environmental and social responsibility leadership practises.
Rare earths are essential for the production of clean, low carbon economy products such as wind power turbines, high efficiency electronics, and electric vehicles and. Rare earths, such as neodymium and praseodymium, are currently primarily sourced from Chinese mining companies where environmental and socially ethical business practises cannot be assured. Torngat will be a vitally important alternative source of these rare earth metals for manufacturers of electronic and cleantech products. Furthermore, there is a predicted global shortage of rare earths that cannot be addressed by Chinese suppliers. These manufacturers and their customers, need reliable, sustainable and ethically produced products.
The mining properties of Torngat Metals are located in a remote but world famous area on the border of Quebec and Newfoundland/Labrador. The Indigeneous and local communities are valued contributors to the success of this company, as community members, employees and stewards of the land and natural resources. Torngat is an active collaborator with the community recognizing that their mutual success and well-being are inextricably linked. This reality informs Torngat’s site exploration and development through to future mine operations planning. As one example, Torngat will be the first mine in the world to deploy Lockheed Martin airships for transporting the mining equipment north to the site, and to transport mined materials back down to processing and shipping terminals on the Canadian coastline. This avoids the need to build 178 km of roadway to the site, bypassing the resulting impact of road construction and heavy trucking activity on lands, wildlife and habitat. This is just one of many ways in which Torngat will demonstrate the power of adopting leading edge technologies and mining practises to enable the clean, low carbon and ethical society of tomorrow.
