LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:
AppGang is a San Francisco-based startup providing marketing services to mobile App Developers. The services will be primarily "self-service" via the website.
HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:
a logo to use across all of our marketing material: web, print, advertising etc.
we want both a logo and a text treatment of the name (if the logo does not include the name).
we want to convey a sense of a fast-moving, professional service, aimed at mobile App Developers, who will tend to be small to medium-sized, quite informal groups. so "professional" here means "will get the job done for you" rather than "uptight and suits". we also want to convey a notion of "ganging together" to help App Developers - we wish our service(s) to have a sense of community, of "belonging" to those who use them.
playful, but restrained and action-oriented. contradictory? we dont think so.
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:
firstly: app developers, initially iPhone, but broadening out. these will tend to be small groups (sometimes one or two people) who are technical, creative and driven. they are doing what they do at least as much because they love it as for making money. some development groups will, of course, be larger, more formal and more heavily funded, but these are likely to be a minority.
agewise and sensibility, this audience will skew towards 20-35 (but not always), and be in the tech universe (techcrunch, gigaom all that stuff).
secondly: publishers of mostly, but not always, technical content on the web. (think cnet, enadget etc). we want them to know that AppGang represents the development community. these folks are selling ad space, again probably skewing 20-35, and again skewing towards tech-land (but not always).
WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:
look at firefish and jivespace in this list (scroll down): http://vector.tutsplus.com/designing/30-...
and http://www.logogalleria.com/h30/
and feedburner, ignite and sparrow in this list:
http://www.fuelyourcreativity.com/50-kic...
all the logos to us appear to have a feeling of action, movement and individuality, combined with a clean, clear text treatment.
the site itself will need to indicate businesslike action also, so we're probably looking at "hotter" colors more than "cooler"
WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:
the name (AppGang) needs to be in the design. we ideally need a graphical device that can sit with the name or be apart from it for "tagging" or "badging" on sites and elsewhere.
the kind of design's we dont want to see: "game"-like; heavy text treatments
