LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:
California State University San Marcos is a 4-year comprehensive university of over 9,000 students located in Northern San Diego County. The campus is young and vibrant, fully engaged in our community, technologically sophisticated and dedicated to teaching future generations through a relevant curriculum with a global perspective. In its brief 20 year history, the University has used several different logo designs.
The University mascot is the Cougar.
In 2010 the University will celebrate its 20th anniversary. Our anniversary theme is Roaring Into Our 20s.
While our school colors have evolved over the years, blue has been a dominant hue in the color scheme at all times. Recent design concepts for brochures and related pieces incorporate the following CMYK builds:
Dark Blue: C=100 / M=80 / Y=0 / K=40
Medium Blue: C=100 / M=80 / Y=0 / K=0
Light Blue: Exact CMYK value to be determined, but think Baby Blue or Sky Blue (similar to the header on our website).
Our official font will be Sansumi.
The campus has earned the nickname CSU Stair Master due to all the stairs on campus.
HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:
The University is updating its identity/image materials and is looking to introduce a new campus logo package in celebration of its 20th anniversary. When the 20th anniversary is over, the two core components of this new logo package will remain and serve as the official campus logo.
One core component of this new logo has already been designed and approved stylized text that reads California State University San Marcos.
As a result, we need concepts for the remaining two components:
1) A complimentary, stylized illustration/icon that can be presented alongside the stylized text. This logo icon will serve as the second core component of the official campus logo, so it will need to create a visual identification with the campus.
2) A visual designation of the 20th anniversary celebration. This can consist of text, illustrations, or both (ie: Celebrating 20 Years 1990-2010; Roaring Into Our 20s, 20th Anniversary, etc.). This component will only be a part of the logo package during the year 2010 as we celebrate our anniversary. After 2010, this component will be stripped away, leaving only the core icon and text components noted above.
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:
Students, Parents, Faculty, Staff, Community, Region and beyond. The new logo should resonate with all audiences.
WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:
For our core logo icon, we would prefer logo designs that are simple and iconic (ie: preferably no extraneous detail, crazy colors, overuse of gradients and drop shadows, or other distracting design flourishes).
Iconic examples include: Nike, Apple, Reebok, the UC Berkeley Cal, etc.
We prefer iconic styles because a) they are easier for the viewer to interpret at first glance; b) they are more easily reproduced in any medium regardless of size, format, background color, paper or other substrate, etc.; and c) they tend to have greater longevity and relevance over time due to their simple and elegant design style.
WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:
Most requirements have already been stated above. A few additional requirements/requests:
We would be interested to see some designs that incorporate stairs in a stylized manner. Other buildings or images of distinction on campus include a rotunda, a clock tower and Kellogg Library.
The logo must be able to be easily reproduced in multiple applications and formats (ie: Web, video, brochures, stationery, signage, clothing, etc.).
The Roaring Into Our 20s theme is ONLY a reference to our age and Cougar mascot. It is NOT a reference to the 1920s. Therefore, imagery from the 1920s is NOT desired.
Our campus already has a secondary Cougar spirit logo used by our Athletics department. The logo we are looking to redesign is our primary campus logo, so another Cougar is NOT desired.
