LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:
We are the Howe School of Technology Management at Stevens Institute of Technology, in Hoboken, New Jersey. http://howe.stevens.edu/. We are a comprehensive business school; we offer a complete range of business courses at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral level. However, like Stevens Institute, we are heavily focused on technology and the use of technology to create economic value. Our research and education programs target the use of technology-based innovation to create new products, new services, new processes and new businesses.
We work to produce graduates who are both strong in technology and savvy in business. That combination of skills makes for a powerful innovator who is well suited to the economic challenges of the 21st century.
HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:
We need a logo. It will appear mostly on our website and on PowerPoint slides. We might also use it for stationery, but that is not a major consideration for us right now.
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:
There are several constituencies that we are targeting. Here they are in order of importance.
The first group is candidates for our graduate education programs. These are typically engineers who have been in the workplace for 3-4 years and are now looking to augment their technical skills with more management skills. They are 20-something or even 30-something, and they are all tech savvy. We want them to see us as offering an education experience that is at the leading edge of theory and practice in the field of Technology Management. We want them to see us as current, practical, innovative and offering education that will help them advance in their careers.
The second group is corporate executives who sponsor students for our education programs. These are older, more experienced folks from senior positions in Fortune 1000 companies. We want them to see us as providing education that is extremely relevant to the problems that their companies are facing today.
The third group is high school students (and their parents) who have a talent for technology and are really interested in business. These are students in the top 10% of their high school class, who are fairly well grounded, ambitious and achievement oriented. They are tech savvy. They and their parents are concerned about their employment prospects, and it is important that they see us as providing them a valuable education that will launch them on a successful career.
Finally, the fourth group is faculty and administrators at other business schools. We want them to see us academically rigorous, but also unconventional. We are not a traditional business school, and we do not aspire to be one. But we are strong in our niche. We want to have them think of us as the leading school in the field of Technology Management. We also want to be viewed as innovators and rule breakers in the field of business education.
WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:
We want a design that conveys a high-tech feel and a sense of professionalism. It should probably be neat and uncluttered. But frankly, we have tried a lot of neat and uncluttered logos ideas before and not been happy with any of them.
It would be nice if the logo could convey some of Stevens long history of technology-based innovation. The Stevens family was Americas first family of entrepreneurs. They were major developers and commercializers of naval, steam and rail technologies in the 19th century. They founded the Institute with the belief that technology-based innovation was the source of growth and prosperity for the nation.
It might also be nice if we could capture something about our location. We are in Hoboken, NJ, on the bank of the Hudson River, overlooking Manhattan.
WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:
We are not a very well known school, so the logo probably needs to have our name in it. The full name is the Wesley J Howe School of Technology Management. Howe School or School of Technology Management or Howe School of Technology Management should probably be explicitly included.
Also, the design should work harmoniously with the current Stevens Institute logo. The Howe School logo and the Stevens logo will often be displayed on the same page, though not right next to each other.
