LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:

We operate established, successful language programs that teach Mandarin and Spanish to children ages 2-6 whose first language is English. Our programs have been so popular with parents that we are becoming preschools, and we want to change our identity to match our new mission. Our current website is at www.languageinaction.com.

While our company name is Language in Action, our programs have distinct names - HolaKids for our Spanish program, and NiHaoKids for our Mandarin program. Both of these names are highlighted in our current logo, and we wish to maintain that collective identity, but with elements that can be separated for the Spanish and Mandarin programs.

HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:

We need a logo that reflects the launch of new preschool programs that teach Spanish and Mandarin to young children. We want to use the logo on our website, in some printed materials and on some products (clothing, coffee mugs). We prefer a clean white background rather than a block, and we want to be able to separate the "HolaKids" and "NiHaoKids" elements because these programs may be offered at different facilities.

A concept that we have discussed would be a globe or sphere that carries a small Language in Action, LLC company banner, with HolaKids in a sun (Spanish) and NiHaoKids in a star (Mandarin). What we like about this concept is that the icons allude to the different language cultures, but they also speak to the global cycle of day and night.

A significant change is that we would like to make our company name - Language in Action, LLC - smaller, and the program names more prominent. One way to think of the concept above is that Language in Action ties together global languages with a single educational program, and this gives "rise" to our Spanish and Mandarin programs.

OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:

Parents in our communities who are interested in having their very young children learn a second (and sometimes a second and third!) language. These parents tend to have high expectations for their children's education, or they have one parent who already speaks one of these languages. There are often sensitivities to cultural stereotypes among people in our audience.

We want our logo to reflect the concepts of "global community", an embrace of cultural distinctions but also unity.

The subject of our logo is definitely children, so we want to reflect that somehow in the design. A challenge for designers in this project is that preschool logos either look too childish, or too corporate. We hope that the international characteristics of our preschools create an opportunity to create something that reflects the fun and wonder of preschool learning, while looking to our students' future in a globalized community.
