LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:
"Like a Hope Sandoval fronted Jesus and Mary Chain playing in a sweet shop."
"Four boys and one velvet-toned girl vocalist who play otherworldly melodic pop with a frazzled guitar noise and a classic psyched-out nous."
The Fire Escapes are a band with a unique authentic sound and vision (yes really!). Honey-through-velvet vocals deliver unusually literate lyrics conjuring up worlds of: space-travel, bi-planes, icebergs, pomegranates in the underworld and stories of love, life, death and crocodiles.
We have been in the Top 10 of the MySpace charts with different songs and are being currently approached by labels/investors.
The band looking to work with an artist(s)/creative(s) to create a visual identity for the band. We are the Velvet Underground looking for our Warhol!
We believe that the best music exists in a symbiotic relationship with the visual art representing it and it is key to us.
Our music is hugely influenced by many other artists but we are forward looking and wish to transcend the past rather than copying it. Authenticity of expression is very important to us. Think beauty with attitude.
Our creative influences include:
Bruno Schulz, Nirvana, The Cocteau Twins, Mazzy Star, Throwing Muses, Patti Smith, My Bloody Valentine, PJ Harvey, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Spacemen 3, William Burroughs, Dylan Thomas, Fuzzy Felt Folk, Felt, Philip K Dick, JG Ballard, TS Eliot, Thomas Mann, Robert Graves, Ladislav Sutnar, William Empson, Wyndham Lewis, Lorca, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Jane Siberry, Blondie, Warhol, Pablo Neruda, Marc Chagall, Louise Bourgeois, Samuel Beckett, the Clangers, Kate Bush, The Brothers Quay, Star Wars, Suede, Beat Happening, Can, Sun Ra, MC5, Velvets, Stooges, The Fall, Sonic Youth, Syd Barrett, the Flaming Lips, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Harmony Guitars, Pavement, Joy Division, Big Star, the Bunnymen, Julian Cope, the Soft Boys, Pere Ubu, Jacques Lacan, Jung, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Adam & the Ants, Madonna, Thirteenth Floor Elevators, the Smiths, DFA, Guided by Voices, REM, the Polaroids, Beefheart, Craig Armstrong, the Modern Lovers, The Doors, The Cramps, Jefferson Airplane, Animal Collective, Harmonia, Alexander McQueen, Eno, the Byrds, Yoko Ono, Primal Scream, Shimmy Disc, Band of Holy Joy, the Durutti Column, the Wolfhounds, Scott Walker, the Hotel Costes, Robert Louis Stevenson, Lydia Lunch, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds.
HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:
The Fire Escapes are looking for a visual identity to complement the band's music.
To kick things off, specifically, we need:
1. A band logo for: The Fire Escapes.
2. A suggested design for our MySpace Header.
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:
We currently have 54,000 MySpace friends (65% male:35% female).
We want them to be transported by our music and to see the world slightly differently after hearing it.
WE LIKE THESE EXAMPLES:
We like cool, strong iconic design that won't date and doesn't follow fashion.
We like bands whose artwork is striking and thought provoking whether through beauty, contrast or audacity.
Power Corruption and Lies - New Order
Mezzanine - Massive Attack
Spacemen 3 - Dreamweapon
The Smiths - The Smiths
WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE THIS IN OUR PIECE:
Rather than tell you what we absolutely must have because we don't believe in setting rules on this we can tell you what we seek to avoid:
The over done cliches of female singers intertwined with animals (e.g Ladyhawke, Goldfrapp, Florence+The Machine artwork) or other whimsical imagery.
Tie dye psychedelia/world music cliches/indie schmindie.
We don't want artwork that is degrading or passive aggressive towards either gender or any minority groups.
