Placely - Locals know best
Discovery/serendipity (discover interesting places to see and things to do)
Signal (this is a curated experience where you'll get great tips)
I've attached a jpg showing styles of app logos we like and don't like. :~)
I've attached a Word doc, since Crowdspring doesn't seem to support paragraph breaks. See attached.
We're very detailed about what we'd like, yet at the same time want to give the designer great creative flexibility.
Sophisticated rather than simple. Bright, happy and fun rather than dull or ultra-urbane. Our initial thoughts are: a hue of purple, green, orange or blue. Stay away from black, grey, brown, red, yellow, lime, pastels. Needs to be in the style of a modern startup. Feel free to hit us with a couple of different colors and versions.
Both an app logo & a website logo
This logo has to work on two levels: as an app logo and a website logo. As an app logo, it needs to work at a very small scale – it can’t be busy. It’s a mobile-first app, so the logo on an iPhone or Android is more important than how it looks on a website. The word “Placely” should not appear as part of the app logo but should appear as part of the website logo.
The completed logo needs to also work on a website. So please look at this through two lenses:
1) How the graphic/logo will look on an iPhone/Android device (with the text appearing beneath it and not part of the graphic)
2) How the graphic will look as part of the full logo on a website. That is, with the image (mobile app logo) at the left, and the type to its right, like so:
Locals know best
We’re not locked into a particular approach; it could be:
• some version of a stylized locator pin
• some treatment of the letter P
• a simple image that conveys “places”
We think of Instagram as the gold standard of mobile app logos – it works visually as a standalone logo on your mobile phone, and the graphic works well when integrated into their website logo (including the type). Some other thoughts:
We like the immediate visual signal that this is a place-related app (visual at left). We like the modern typeface. We don’t like the too-urbane colors (we do want something sophisticated though, so don’t misunderstand).
We like this too, even though it’s a completely different visual style: a bit quirkier, more fun.
You might want to also look at other apps in this space:

What we DON’T LIKE:
No clichéd images of just a house and tree.
