UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect. UNFPA - because everyone counts.7 Billion Actions CampaignThe world’s population will top the seven billion mark in October. This is a unique moment in human history, as it is the first time most of the world’s population can participate in a global milestone directly and in real-time. Realizing this unique opportunity, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has enlisted a diverse group of corporations, organizations, and individuals to help lead 7 Billion Actions. This global initiative will showcase the people behind the number using online, mobile, and offline actions and operate as an inclusive, open-source endeavor. Clearly, reaching 7 billion is an achievement and a challenge. What is the exact name you would like in your logo?

We need versions in three languages (English, Spanish and French): English: 7 Billion Actions | Spanish: 7 Mil Millones de Acciones | French: 7 Milliards d’Actions

What is your industry?

UNFPA works in partnership with governments, as well as with other agencies and civil society broadly, to advance its mission. Two frameworks serve to focus its efforts: The Programme of Action adopted at the International Conference on Population and Development and the Millennium Development Goals, which the international development community committed itself to six years later. The three core areas of our work - reproductive health, gender equality and population and development strategies - are inextricably related. Population dynamics, including growth rates, age structure, fertility and mortality, migration and more, influence every aspect of human, social and economic development. Reproductive health and women’s empowerment powerfully affect, and are affected by, population trends.

Describe the target audience for your logo?

This is a global campaign. We want to engage a worldwide audience, encouraging individuals and organizations to step forward, be counted and commit themselves to certain issues, i.e. climate change, food security, education, maternal health, etc.

What 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your logo?

In October 2011, Earth’s population reaches 7 billion. This global milestone is both a great opportunity and a great challenge. Although people are living longer and healthier lives, and couples worldwide are choosing to have fewer children, huge inequities persist. Whether we can live together on a healthy planet will depend on the choices and decisions we make now. The child logo should reflect that in a world of 7 billion, and counting, we need to count on each other. While some will focus on the number, we will take the opportunity given by the 7 billion to connect the people behind the number. Each of us has a story to tell and we want people to participate in this milestone by telling their own stories directly. We want the child logo to personalize the 7 billion mark and convey the message that more than numbers we are talking about human beings. The 7 Billion Actions Campaign logo has to be dynamic as the campaign emphasizes the need to act now. Whether global population levels off at 9 or 14 billion will depend on how quickly lives improve. The trend towards stabilization is linked to advances in maternal and child health, access to family planning, girls’ education, improved economic prospects and expanded opportunities for women. Demographic changes depend on policies and services, this is true, but they depend as well on individual choices. Everybody needs to care about the 7 billion because with our actions, we can make a difference in other people’s lives.

What logo styles do you like (text only, image only, text and image, etc.)?

We are open to any style of design. Currently, the parent logo is text-only, but we are open to any expression that works well alongside the parent logo. We only require that the logo contains the words “7 Billion Actions” in the three languages provided. Please, see the attached parent logos for reference.

What colors do you want to see in your logo?

Each language should come with:At least one (1) full-color versionAt least one (1) black & white versionAt least one (1) positive version: an example of the logo on a bright background (such as yellow)At least one (1) negative version: an example of the logo on a dark background (such as black)The parent logo is grey and orange, so we are open to color combinations that can compliment or enhance the parent logo colors.Specific colors in parent logo:(Orange) Pantone 32-1 CVS (C:0 M:50 Y:100 K:0)(Grey) 80% Black (C:0 M:0 Y:0 K:80)

What adjectives should best describe your logo?

Easily recognizable, culturally sensitive, modern, minimalist, stylish, dynamic.

Where will your logo be used (print, website, etc.)?

The logo will be used in everything we produce, including but not limited to:
Print: full color & B/W, on paper and other materials; Website, Letterhead Name Cards, T-Shirts, backdrops, gift items, etc.

The logo should be visually compelling both at small and large scales – everything from small program ads to large billboards.

Do you have additional info or links you want to share?

In addition to the $1000 award, the winning designer will receive a certificate signed by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Executive Director, Babatunde Osotimehin, acknowledging the designers’ work. The selected logo will be featured in all the communication materials produced in each region around the world and will be seen by hundreds of millions of people. We require the winning designer to deliver their design in three languages:1 logo design in English- Text: “7 Billion Actions”1 logo design in Spanish - Text: “7 Mil Millones de Acciones”1 logo design in French - Text: “7 Milliards d’Actions”You must submit two versions of each logo variation: one (1) in full color and one (1) in black & white.We want the new logos to complement the current World at 7 Billion parent logo, which has been translated into three languages:English: 7B / 7 Billion / The World at 7 Billion / The World at 7 Billion Counting on Each OtherSpanish: 7M / 7 Mil Millones / Somos 7 Mil Millones / Somos 7 Mil Millones Cuentas conmigo, cuento contigoFrench: 7M / 7 Milliards / Un Monde de 7 milliards, comptons l’une sur l’autre.EPS files for the current logos (versions in English, French and Spanish) are attached as project files. We want the new designs to have some consistency with the parent logo (the attached EPS files). Therefore, for the “7 Billion” logotype, please use the same font that we used in the parent logo (NOTE: the logotype was based on the typeface Bauhaus - medium weight - but some of the letters were modified). For the “Actions” part of the logotype, you can keep the same font/style or change it. We encourage you to be creative in designing the new logo – in addition to the text, we welcome original graphics/marks you think would make the overall logo stronger. In addition, the logo you design in this project should be stylish, modern and appealing, yet it has to be minimalist to be in line with the parent logo. The logo you design in this project should be visually recognizable across regions, despite whatever language it is in. We want viewers to easily connect the child logo to the parent logo.

Note on the word "Actions":
Designers, please consider how you can put some emphasis on the word "Actions". For many of the designs, the emphasis has mainly been on the "7" or on the development of some sort of imagery. The word "Actions" is a very important part of this child logo.

Language Variations and Color Variations:
Designers, please make sure to include ALL language variations, not just one. We need to see this logo in English, French and Spanish. Also please review the Creative Brief carefully. Under the section, "What colors do you want to see in your logo?", we are asking for several color variations. Please make sure to include ALL requested color variations or we cannot accept your entry. Thank you.

"Overused/Overdone" Designs:
Designers, please be aware that a fellow designer is viewing your work. It's easy for me to tell if a design is "overused/overdone", so please really consider pushing the boundaries of your work for us. We are looking for something that goes beyond stick figure people, dot patterns, globes, trees, etc. Thank you for your consideration.

Designers, while many of you have submitted icons or images that coincide with "7 Billion Actions", we are also looking to see your typographic skill sets too. Designs don't have to have an icon if you feel it is not necessary. Simple typographic treatments can work as well.
