LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:
Internet search engine and online services. The name of the company is Ginio
HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:
We need mainly the Logo, FavIcon, and business cards, the other stationary items would be nice to have but we don't care much so don't spend much energy there.
The only requirement you have is to use ORANGE as the logos color. You may use another combining color, but you must use orange mainly. The logo is for an Internet Search Engine so it must be PORTABLE, meaning we can use it in very small sizes, such as on a browser toolbar.
My evaluation criteria for logos is the following:
1) Highly Recognizable: Id like you to provide, along with the initial concepts, a small solid gray-scale version of it. this is how I test the typeface recognition factor. Some question I ask myself are: Can I spot it instantly? Can I recognize it well even if I change the colors and effects?, is the type-face unique? Can the logo be identifiable even if it's reduced to 75px wide.
How do I test this condition? I reduce the size of the logo to 75px wide, I print it both by itself, and with some dummy text around, etc.
Disney and Yahoo are examples of logos that I see pass this test. They have visual equity.
It is highly recommended that your "G" is highly recognizable. we would like to make this our favicon as opposed to any graphic.
2) Readability: This is something I find extremely important. That's why I prefer spelled letters instead of handwriting-like letters like in the Johnson&Johnson logo. It is a great logo, I am not saying it's not, but it is not for an internet search engine for sure. This is a component that causes frustration, some designers have tried to satisfy condition #1-Highly Recognizable at the expense of #2 Readability.
3) Portability: Another reason why I reduce the logo size to 75px width is because the nature of our business involves engaging in co-branded deals and partnerships, application development etc.
Our logo could be used for:
a) Powering the search feature of another site and showing a very small "Powered by" logo next to the search box
b) Creating a desktop-based application that requires an icon, a firefox plug-in, extension, a favicon for the site.
c) Creating a browser toolbar.
4) Neatness and Presence: This is the easiest component to test, I simply place the logo on a "Test" page similar to the results-page interface that I have attached. If I like what I see, and it passess all of the tests above, then I approve the logo.
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:
WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:
WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:
The logo must be orange.
It must be better than the status quo (what we currently have)
It must fit the design (in the attached file) nicely.
What we don't like:
Heavy use of clip-art
We are primarily an internet search engine, however we provide other online services so please don't put a magnifying-glass on the logo to resemble search or anything that limits us from getting into other online activities.
