LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:
Help! Atchison is a picturesque, historic town located at the bend of the Missouri River in northeastern Kansas, but we're saddled with a fuddy-duddy logo that isn't "us" at all. Can you help us capture our sense of place with a new logo design?
Here's how we think about our town:
Beautiful, historic Atchison is located in Atchison County, Kansas, about 45 minutes northwest of the Kansas City metro and 45 minutes northeast of the capitol city of Topeka. Atchison is unique in Kansas for the historic charm of its riverside setting, boutique shops, quaint restaurants and cafes, grand homes, and stately buildings.
Incorporated in 1858, Atchison is known for its riverside vistas alongside the Missouri River, its grand historic homes, and tree-lined brick streets. Atchison is a magnet for shopping and dining day trippers as well as festival-goers to its annual celebrations.
Offering premier private and public schools, Atchison is also home to Benedictine College and Highland Community College Technical Center. With a population over 10,000, Atchison is a community rooted in history and tradition, making strong strides into the future with a strong manufacturing and industrial sector, homegrown financial institutions, and state-of-the-art medical facilities.
As the birthplace of Amelia Earhart, one of our states and nations most revered role models, Atchison is a community that inspires, charms, and embraces all who call it their home or destination.
This project brands a new logo for the City organization, a.k.a. the "City of Atchison, Kansas."
HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:
The City of Atchison needs a new logo - bad. This is the first step in a complete re-branding process. And it? Is time.
Our city logo is still the formal city seal. You know the type -- a round government seal that's so very bureaucratic. Hey, we're all about tradition here in Atchison, but we're also about the scenery.
Though the city seal will continue to be used for official documents, we are looking for a logo that's more evocative of Atchison's spirit and sense of place. We want something that says "We're a modern City Hall that cares" that also captures the historic charm of the community.
Here's the thing: If we pick your design, we're gonna use it everywhere! Literally. The new logo design will be used on our new website (to launch later this year), entry signs on major roads into the city, police, fire, and public works vehicles, employee tees and polo shirts, promotional pens, lapel pins, letterhead, stationery, envelopes, insulated mugs, etc. Depending on the design, it may also inspire public art in the future.
Heck, we may all go out and get tattoos! Mmm, maybe not.
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:
Our primary audience is current residents and business owners. These are our neighbors, friends, co-workers, civic leaders, shop keepers ... everybody. We see them in the grocery aisle and sit next to them at the Friday night football game. Gotta keep 'em happy.
Our secondary audience is potential residents and business owners. We definitely want to make a good first impression with these folks. More is more, right?
Other target audiences include other city governments, state agencies, non-profit organizations, and members of the media. First impressions? Also key.
WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:
The ideal design should be dignified without being stuffy, historic without being old-fashioned, modern without being space age. We're thinking "comfortable in that way that mixes old and new together, classic and modern, timeless but today."
If you want to check out some photos of Atchison, we'd recommend Colleen Prohaska's gallery at: http://www.pbase.com/magneticfish/atchis.... Colleen's not associated with us or this project in any way, but a few of us around here are secret fans of her work. We think she really "gets" Atchison.

WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE THIS IN OUR DESIGN:
We absolutely must have "City of" and "Atchison" and "Kansas" in our design.
