LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:
I am a letterpress printer producing a hand-printed broadside describing the history of one particular printing press.
HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:
For the broadside, I need a line illustration of the press in question (a Vandercook SP15, if you're curious). The attached grayscale photo shows the press, and I would like you to use that as a base to create an original [vector-based] line illustration, from which I will make a printing plate and incorporate it into the broadside alongside the text.
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:
Letterpress printing aficionados and historians who will be receiving a set of broadsides commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Vandercook company. Many printers are participating, and each is creating an original broadside.
WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:
Since this is CrowdSpring, I'm hoping to crowd source creativity as well as technical skill. While I would certainly look at a faithful, direct line illustration (such as you might see in a technical drawing), I'm also open to considering a wider creative range, for example done in the style of a woodcut, a wood engraving, a freehand sketch, something stylized, etc. To some extent, the style of the illustration I end up choosing will strongly influence the overall design direction of the whole broadside.
WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:
Since this will be printed letterpress, the art needs to be delivered as a vector-based line drawing in Illustrator format so that I can have a plate made. The final printed size of the illustration will be around 5 x 7. Given the nature of the printing process, it may be a bit challenging to hold extraordinarily fine details (such as the engraving on a dollar bill), but as long as the detailing isn't too intricate, there shouldn't be a problem.
