Business Name

Sage Bionetworks

What do you do?

Sage Bionetworks is a non-profit medical research organization. One of our projects is building a web platform for sharing scientific data and analysis.

Do you have specific size requirements for the icons or buttons?

All icons require 16x16 pixel and 24x24 pixel format, and the Photoshop or Illustrator files used to create the icons.

How many different icons and/or buttons do you need designed?

8 icons in 2 sizes

What is your industry?

Academic medical research / Pharmaceuticals

Describe the target audience for your icon or button design

Scientists, statisticians, data analysts.

What 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your icon or button design?

Professional quality software
Focus on putting clear information in front of people.

What icon or button design styles do you like?

We currently use the Fugue icon set ( for some things in the UI, and have some custom icons for types of scientific data. The site design is minimalist, so not too flashy or 3D. Also, see alpha version of the site up at For example, see which shows some of our existing custom icons. The white image on colored background could work well for hte new icons we need.

What colors do you want to see in your icon or button design?

Yellows, reds, oranges, consistent with the pallet in the alpha site.

What colors do you NOT want to see in your icon or button design?

Nothing too bold, colors should be more muted than primary.

What adjectives should best describe your icon or button design?

Clean, minimal, simple, clear, professional.

What content must be included in the icon or button design?

1. Project (Active ongoing effort managed on our website) 2. Study (Packed up materials from a completed clinical study) 3. Data (Generic icon for data of unspedified format. Already have separate icons for specific data types) 4. Code 5. Analysis (sequence of steps, some sort of flowchart) 6. Step (one step in a larger Analysis) 7. Folder (generic container) 8. A generic entity/object (default to show if we extend our type system and don't have a specific icone for new type yet)

Do you have additional requirements or links you'd like to share?

Just realized that you can't actually get to some of the pages in our app without creating an account. To simplify matters have uploaded a screen shot

In response to early designs people have been drawn more to the white icon on colored background approach of our existing clinical, genetic, expression icons than the Fugue type approach.

Have added new mockup of an analysis page from our application. Application icon should be a mini-simplified version of this sort of flow chart. Step should distinctly emphasize one node in this sort of graph.

Test subjects like the concept of different colors for the different icons. Particularly when the icons are at a small size, different background colors help people distinguish different icons in a list of object types. The larger icons would be used on the pages for the individual object types so would help train users to link the color to the object type.

Have a number of entries that are getting pretty close and want to make sure people have time to adapt to feedback.
