What do you do?
We're a new, fledgling civic startup with the goal of increasing citizen participation in politics. We've got some new ideas about how to do this, but are stumped on a design issue and need your help.
What we're asking you to do is help us visualize the feedback that citizens give to politicians. On the site, they can give a thumbs up or a thumbs down each day. We sum these up and present them back to users so they know how those politicians are doing each day.
We're stuck. As you'll see, our current idea for visualizing the sentiment is a ring around politicians' faces. It ranges on a gradient from green to white to red. If feedback is +300 thumbs up votes and -300 thumbs down votes, the ring appears exactly white (in between green and red). More positive sums are greener and more negative sums are redder.
However, this comes with a major limitation: Red is also the color of the Republican party. Having red mean both "bad" and Republican will make Republicans not want to visit our site. We don't want that. This is an American site to start, and we want people of both parties to sign up and use it. Democrats are blue, by the way.
We've thought of other solutions. One solutionusing green to white to grayavoids red but downplays negative feedback relative to positive feedback. Positive and negative feedback are equally important, so if color is used attention must be paid to how eye-catching each is.
We're wide open to ideas at this point, as we've been mulling this over for a while. We'll consider ideas for solutions ranging from the very simple to the more complex. Complete re-thinks are welcome, too. The award goes to the submission that we end up using on the site.
Do you have a desired widget or app screen size?
See sample image for a rough sense of the size of the area where the visualization is needed. It's flexible though and we're open to your creative ideas.
How many pages do you need designed?

Target Audience
What is your industry?
Internet
Describe the target audience for your widget or app
Everyday citizens.
What are 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your widget or app design?
1. Who is the politician in question?
2. Is feedback about this politician good or bad today?
3. Is there a high volume of feedback for this politician today? Also very optionally: Is this feedback unusual for this politician?
Style and Concept
What widget or app design styles do you like?
Modern, current web design.
What colors do you want to see in your widget or app design?
Any colors. But pay attention to cultural associations around colors.
What colors do you NOT want to see in your widget or app design?
Be careful about using blue or red to mean good or bad.
What adjectives should best describe your widget or app design?
Clear, eye-catching, simple, modern, attractive.
What content must be included in the widget or app design?
You can include just the feedback visualization, or you can re-mock the whole area included in the attached screenshot if you'd like. In the screenshot, the politicians are presented underneath a news story about them. Feedback from users/citizens to the politicians based on what they do in the article is presented as part of the display.
