The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) represents more than 200 accredited zoos and aquariums in North America. With more than 180 million annual visitors representing diverse cultures and regions, 750,000 animals from more than 6000 different species, including 1000 endangered species, AZA accredited zoos and aquariums are the trust animal experts and are uniquely positioned to engage the public in saving species from extinction.

Over the past several decades, AZA accredited zoos and aquariums have saved dozens of endangered species, including the American bison, the California condor, the black footed ferret, several species of fish and many more. AZA accredited institutions have strong breeding programs, advanced scientific and genetic capacity, and extensive collaboration with local, national and international groups working around the globe.

Despite these notable successes, the extinction crisis grows worse and AZA accredited zoos and aquariums believe we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to address this crisis. AZA is launching a bold new initiative to combine the power of more than 180 million annual zoo and aquarium visitors with the resources and collective expertise of AZA members and partners to save the most vulnerable wildlife species from extinction. This initiative is designed to restore endangered species to sustainable population levels in zoos and in the wild.
