What does your company do?

I work exclusively with small, boutique wineries providing accounting, financial, and advisory services. I am also an Advanced Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor (99% of all small wineries use QuickBooks) and I have developed a system for using QuickBooks in the wine industry.

I also teach seminars on winery accounting, wine costing, and winery financial strategies for SSU Wine Business Institute (the extenstion program for the only university in the US that offers a MBA in wine business, so this is a big deal). So I have a big teaching and coaching foccus in the service that I provide.

Describe your audience

Owners of boutique wineries. These folks are passionate about wine, but not so much about the financial thing. They are like most scrappy entrepreneurs: willing to roll up their sleeves and get stuff done. Most are doing the bookkeeping themselves, or they have hired a part-time bookkeeper. Others have an office manager who is not a bookkeeper and is typically over-worked. Even though many winery owners have been successful in their previous career, they don't understand how to use financials to run a business. The books tend to be a giant mess, because the accounting for a winery is very complicated. Many owners don't even know if they are making a profit because they have to invest so much cash into equipment and inventory. That investment sucks up a lot of cash.

I provide an advisory/proactive service, in addition to QuickBooks consulting
I educate/coach them on the financial thing.
I only work with boutique/small wineries.

I don't like: empower
I like the term CFO, but most people don't understand what they do, so it is best to not use this term.

I am not bragging when I say that I am THE expert on setting up and using QuickBooks for a small, boutique winery and on calculating the true cost of the wine. People find me because of those needs, but my services go beyond these tasks.

The goal of the system is to create useful management reports. I also teach (in both eCourses and live seminars) and I coach my consulting clients on how to use the reports to manage the business, on forecasting, and on creating financial strategies. This is the work of a CFO, but no one offers this, so I am not bragging when I say that I am the best CFO for small wineries.

My competitors provide one slice of the picture (the bookkeeping or the tax return). No one is offering CFO type of work for a boutique winery.
