As part of that identity, design acts as a powerful tool for communication and persuasion, both of which are hugely important to political strategy, tactics, and political campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>For a long time, design in political campaigns has followed a particular set of unspoken guidelines: be safe, follow tradition, don\u2019t stray from the red, white, and blue of our forefathers.<\/p>\n<p>But in the past few decades, design has also been used to promote propaganda. When used well in election campaigns branding it says more than a candidates name. Color, type, and image contribute to the perception of that name, sometimes the person, too.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a closer look at political branding examples and how design has helped candidates succeed in recent elections.<\/p>\n<h2>How good design helped \u00a1Ocasio! win her election<\/h2>\n<p>Look no further than Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez&#8217;s campaign for a recent example of how design effectively expressed a candidate&#8217;s personality and paved the way toward a win.<\/p>\n<p>Just 28 years old, newcomer Ocasio-Cortez boldly ran against Joe Crowley, a heavily favored incumbent for the Democratic primary in New York&#8217;s 14th Congressional District.<\/p>\n<p>In its coverage of the campaign, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2018\/7\/2\/17519414\/ocasio-cortez-campaign-design-campaign-posters-tandem-branding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vox.com<\/a> pointed out that Ocasio-Cortez&#8217;s brand played a significant role in securing her the win:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>While she\u2019s a vocal candidate with progressive ideals, she has an equally communicative, but silent, tool at her side: her visual brand. On the streets of New York\u2019s 14th Congressional District, which includes parts of eastern Bronx and northern Queens, you might spot vibrant yellow campaign posters printed with a portrait of Ocasio-Cortez with her last name bookended by Spanish exclamation points, and calls to action in bold type, set at an attention-grabbing angle.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=28549\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-28549 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130906\/ocasio-poster-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130906\/ocasio-poster-1.png 700w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130906\/ocasio-poster-1-300x219.png 300w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130906\/ocasio-poster-1-640x466.png 640w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130906\/ocasio-poster-1-400x291.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez ran as an outsider, and the design and branding of her election campaign reflected this. You can see this in her visually bold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/poster-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poster design<\/a> above. Her opponent&#8217;s campaign&#8217;s design was rooted in the traditional (with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/color-theory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">colors<\/a> red, white, and blue used prominently).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28526\" src=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130911\/dgsojfmvmaibn1s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130911\/dgsojfmvmaibn1s.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130911\/dgsojfmvmaibn1s-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130911\/dgsojfmvmaibn1s-640x337.jpg 640w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130911\/dgsojfmvmaibn1s-400x211.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When compared to the centrist, comparatively safe designs of Crowley\u2019s traditionally styled posters, Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s campaign materials stood out.\u00a0Ocasio-Cortez&#8217;s used purple, yellow, and other bold choices to visually differentiate her campaign from her opponent.<\/p>\n<p>Her political branding strategy was to sound different and to look different.\u00a0It\u2019s no surprise that Ocasio-Cortez created a compelling argument for shifting toward a revolution &#8211; in design and in politics itself.<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay Ballant, an adjunct faculty member at the Maryland Institute College of Art, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2018\/7\/2\/17519414\/ocasio-cortez-campaign-design-campaign-posters-tandem-branding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">attributes<\/a> the success of Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s branding to her\u00a0\u201cfearlessness in taking on a comfy establishment figure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ballant explains that by doubling down on her persona in her election branding, Ocasio-Cortez clearly emphasizes her strength as a lawmaker and as a non-traditional, radical candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez tapped\u00a0Tandem Design NYC\u00a0to create the design for her campaign. Tandem took inspiration from past grassroots campaigns and movements by labor and civil rights activists to create the striking brand.<\/p>\n<p>Tandem&#8217;s lead designer Maria Arenas explained some of the motivation behind the design to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90180561\/how-the-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-campaign-got-its-powerful-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fast Company<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>She is a non-traditional candidate running a non-traditional campaign, and we wanted her visual identity to reflect that, to be true to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The colorful and engaging visual style of Ocasio-Cortez\u2019 campaign materials defiantly stepped outside of the stale boundaries established by the establishment.<\/p>\n<h2>The power of a word and a logo in political branding<\/h2>\n<p>What lessons can political brand strategists, marketers, and politicians learn from the role design played in Ocasio-Cortez&#8217;s success?<\/p>\n<p>First, the power of a single visual or brand element cannot be underestimated in political candidate branding and political brand management.<\/p>\n<p>Take, for example, Obama&#8217;s 2008 \u201cHope\u201d campaign. Whatever your political leaning, it&#8217;s hard to dismiss the power of the message Obama&#8217;s \u201cHope\u201d logo had in swaying voters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28527\" src=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130910\/1200px-barack_obama_primary_campaign_logo_2008.svg_.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130910\/1200px-barack_obama_primary_campaign_logo_2008.svg_.png 700w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130910\/1200px-barack_obama_primary_campaign_logo_2008.svg_-300x258.png 300w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130910\/1200px-barack_obama_primary_campaign_logo_2008.svg_-640x549.png 640w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130910\/1200px-barack_obama_primary_campaign_logo_2008.svg_-400x343.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were many other elements to Obama&#8217;s election campaign design, but that single word and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/logo-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">logo design<\/a>, and the consistent use of the branding throughout the national election helped strengthen his message.<\/p>\n<p>But not all logos created for political candidate branding were as immediately successful as these, however.<\/p>\n<p>The logo for Hilary Clinton&#8217;s 2016 campaign was <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/2015\/04\/everything-thats-wrong-with-hillarys-new-logo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">greeted with much derision and ridicule<\/a> when it was first released. The logo was very simple: a blue H with the cross-bar turned into a red arrow that pointed to the right.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the complaints centered around the idea that it was <i>too<\/i>\u00a0simple. So simple, a child could have designed it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I don&#39;t mean to brag but it was actually my 4 year old who designed the Hillary logo for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Hillary2016?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Hillary2016<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HillaryClinton?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#HillaryClinton<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/xKbQyx52SQ\">pic.twitter.com\/xKbQyx52SQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; tomgreever (@tomgreever) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomgreever\/status\/587454133805850624?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 13, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t until long after the campaign was over that its creator, famed logo designer Michael Beirut, revealed that this was actually the plan all along.\u00a0Beirut told podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/99percentinvisible.org\/episode\/negative-space-logo-design-michael-bierut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">99% Invisible<\/a> about his inspiration and motivation during a more extended discussion on logo design:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The result was intentionally simple: the letter H with an arrow pointing forward, rendered in the primary colors of the American flag. Bierut recalls saying: \u201cI want something that\u2019s so simple that a first-grader could do it with construction paper, Elmer\u2019s glue and kindergarten scissors.\u201d He \u201cdidn\u2019t want a fancy thing you needed to know software programs to create, [rather] something that was easy to draw as a heart or a peace sign or a smiley face.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28530\" src=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130909\/clinton-logo-uses.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130909\/clinton-logo-uses.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130909\/clinton-logo-uses-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130909\/clinton-logo-uses-640x320.jpg 640w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130909\/clinton-logo-uses-400x200.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the criticism, the Clinton campaign stood their ground, and eventually, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/423037\/its-official-hillary-clintons-logo-is-actually-perfect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">perception of the logo changed over time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second lesson that political branding strategists and consultants should take to heart: haters gonna hate. But given time and consistent usage, most designs can overcome the initial rush to judgment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28531\" src=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130909\/make-america-great-again.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130909\/make-america-great-again.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130909\/make-america-great-again-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130909\/make-america-great-again-640x488.jpg 640w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/27130909\/make-america-great-again-400x305.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The power of a simple message on a hat as a political strategy<\/h2>\n<p>Election branding isn&#8217;t limited to candidate logos. Politicians have successfully used articles of clothing, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/t-shirt-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">t-shirts<\/a> or hats, to promote strong messages.<\/p>\n<p>Take for example Donald Trump&#8217;s \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d slogan on a simple hat. Michael Beirut <a href=\"https:\/\/99percentinvisible.org\/episode\/negative-space-logo-design-michael-bierut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noted<\/a> that Trump&#8217;s consistent use of the hat turned it into a powerful branding element:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0It\u2019s meant to be the kind of thing you associate with hard-working, salt of the earth Americans. As a wearable object, the hat became both highly visible and a signal of particular commitment.
