{"id":26073,"date":"2018-02-12T10:19:11","date_gmt":"2018-02-12T16:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/?p=26073"},"modified":"2023-07-03T18:53:49","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T23:53:49","slug":"augmented-reality-marketing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/augmented-reality-marketing\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Augmented Reality Will Be One of The Hottest Marketing Trends in 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26081\" src=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/27131339\/augmented-reality.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/27131339\/augmented-reality.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/27131339\/augmented-reality-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/27131339\/augmented-reality-400x221.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Augmented Reality (AR) is 2018\u2019s major marketing buzzword.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re not familiar with augmented reality, AR\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Augmented_reality\">is<\/a>, according to Wikipedia:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are &#8220;augmented&#8221; by computer-generated perceptual information, ideally across multiple sensory modalities, including\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Visual\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Visual\">visual<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Hearing\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hearing\">auditory<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Haptic perception\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haptic_perception\">haptic<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Somatosensory system\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Somatosensory_system\">somatosensory<\/a>, and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Olfactory\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olfactory\">olfactory<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Augmented_reality#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The overlaid sensory information can be constructive (i.e. additive to the natural environment) or destructive (i.e. masking of the natural environment) and is spatial registered with the physical world such that it is perceived as an\u00a0<a title=\"Immersion (virtual reality)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Immersion_(virtual_reality)\">immersive<\/a>\u00a0aspect of the real environment.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Augmented_reality#cite_note-:1-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In this way, Augmented reality alters one\u2019s current perception of a real world environment, whereas\u00a0<a title=\"Virtual reality\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virtual_reality\">virtual reality<\/a>\u00a0replaces the real world environment with a simulated one.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Augmented_reality#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Augmented_reality#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>AR is more than a buzzword.<\/p>\n<p>AR is an exciting and engaging way for marketers to get in touch with customers.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digi-capital.com\/reports\/#augmented-virtual-reality\">report<\/a> from\u00a0Digi-Capital,\u00a0 AR technology is poised to become part of the mainstream significantly faster than previously anticipated.\u00a0It is projected, for example, that the market for mobile AR will be worth an incredible $108 billion by 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Global Market Insights predicts that the AR market\u00a0is expected to nearly double in size\u00a0by 2024. GMI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gminsights.com\/industry-analysis\/augmented-reality-ar-market\">notes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As our mobile devices become more powerful and social apps better integrate with AR, brands will use AR to better engage with consumers. For example, using your location, brands could trigger sponsored AR content, which can only be accessed at that spot, at that time. Pok\u00e9mon Go was the pioneer with this idea, and I feel Instagram and Facebook will soon be integrating this tech into\u00a0its platforms. &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/repcarter\">Chris Carter<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/repinteractive.com\/\">Rep Interactive<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Brands want to engage more meaningfully with their customers, and AR technology offers an ideal platform to achieve that heightened level of engagement on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/small-business-social-media-content-strategy\/\">social media<\/a> and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/pages\/deloitte-growth-enterprise-services\/articles\/technology-trends-middle-market-companies-survey.html\">Deloitte survey<\/a>, nearly 90 percent of companies with revenues between $100 million and $1 billion are already using some form of AR (or virtual reality) as part of their business.<\/p>\n<p>The ubiquity of smartphones in combination with now widely available AR developer kits makes it easier than ever for companies to close the distance between digital and physical consumer interactions.<\/p>\n<p>Even small businesses and startups should consider this chance to connect their product to the lives of their customers. Companies can combine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/packaging-design-trends-2018\/\">packaging design<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/packaging-design-tips-psychology\/\">printed materials<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/business-artificial-intelligence-machine-learning\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a>, and augmented reality to create a genuinely engaging digital experience.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, we&#8217;ve seen more and more companies offering AR services to others. For example, we helped <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holition.com\/\">Holition<\/a>, a creative innovation studio that among other things, leverages AR, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/logo-design\/\">logo design<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/business-card-design\/\">business card design<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/logo-and-business-card-design\/design-of-an-augmented-reality-logo-app-button-and-support-stationery-2282787\/\">project<\/a>. Today, Holition works with some of the world&#8217;s most exclusive brands (De Beers, TAGHeuer, Louis Vuitton, Lacoste, and many more).<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that AR isn&#8217;t just about adding something to the real world that&#8217;s not already there. It can also mean subtracting something from a person&#8217;s view to declutter.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if your company make gluten-free products, an AR app can let the customer look at retail shelves and see just gluten-free products available for purchase (removing the noise of all other products on the shelves).<\/p>\n<p>We looked at the creative ways companies are using AR in their marketing to give you some ideas on how you can incorporate AR in your own marketing strategy.<\/p>\n<h2>Will it fit?<\/h2>\n<p>What has over 200 million published copies worldwide and is almost as popular as the Bible and the Harry Potter series?<\/p>\n<p>If you said \u201cthe catalog from that Swedish furniture company with the meatballs,\u201d you\u2019d be right!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ikea.com\/us\/en\/\">IKEA<\/a> was one of the first to adopt augmented reality when the company added it into the app version of its ubiquitous catalog way back in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>As innovative as it was, that version was still quite limited. It required a copy of the paper catalog present, and the interface was tiny and hard to use.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017 Apple released iOS 11, which included <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/arkit\/\">ARKit<\/a>. ARKit is the tech giant\u2019s framework that created the possibility for any developer to add augmented reality to their apps quickly. Ikea quickly took advantage of this and released their newest kick at the AR can: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ikea.com\/gb\/en\/customer-service\/ikea-apps\/\">IKEA Place<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Say Hej to IKEA Place\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r0ViFTEb8aQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The first [augmented reality] experience we had was more like a picture,\u201d said Michael Valdsgaard, Ikea\u2019s head of digital transformation to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ikea-place-ar-kit-augmented-reality\/\">Wired<\/a>. &#8220;You could put in a 3-D object, but you couldn\u2019t really move around it or trust the size of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apple\u2019s ARKit changed all of this. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ikea-place-ar-kit-augmented-reality\/\">As Wired reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now, Ikea claims the 3-D furniture in Ikea Place shows up at scale with 98 percent accuracy, with true-to-life representations of the texture, fabric, lighting, and shadows. CEO Tim Cook has made a point of touting the company\u2019s vision where it believes augmented reality could go.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think AR is big and profound,\u201d Cook said during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ca\/newsroom\/2017\/08\/apple-reports-third-quarter-results\/\">recent earnings phone call<\/a>. &#8220;This is one of those huge things that we&#8217;ll look back at and marvel at the start of it. I think customers are going to see it in a variety of ways and it feels great to get [AR] going at a level that can get all of the developers behind it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Updates to iOS 11 have continued to build on the initial promise of ARKit.<\/p>\n<p>iOS 11.3 (currently in <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.apple.com\/sp\/betaprogram\/\">public beta<\/a>) gives developers the ability to project scenes onto flat, vertical surfaces. It\u2019s easy to see companies that sell wall-based products like art, wallpaper, and paint using this feature so customers can preview a product before buying.<\/p>\n<p>Companies like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.augment.com\">Augment<\/a> are building on this idea with services that integrate AR to project product previews in real-time.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Introducing AR view\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uhdOzpblrm0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/amazon-logo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Online shopping giant Amazon<\/a> is also using AR to give customers this \u201cpreview-in-place\u201d ability. Customers in the United States can use the Amazon app on their iOS 11 devices to place \u201cthousands of items\u201d virtually into their homes.<\/p>\n<p>Other retailers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcommerce360.com\/2017\/08\/04\/wayfairs-augmented-reality-app-moves-new-smartphone\/\">Wayfair<\/a> and Target have also integrated AR into their digital catalogs.<\/p>\n<p>Target\u2019s implementation is interesting because it\u2019s not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/mobile-app-design-trends\/\">app-based<\/a>; it runs on the <a href=\"https:\/\/target.com\">target.com<\/a> mobile site. They call this feature \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.target.com\/article\/2017\/10\/see-it-in-your-space\">See It In Your Space<\/a>\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Guests shopping the new Project 62 line can use the feature to place three-dimensional versions of\u00a0real\u00a0Target home products within photos of actual rooms at home, and move them around at proper scale to see how they\u2019d look\u2014all before buying the product.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/art.com\">art.com<\/a> has added AR to their iPhone app as well. ArtView gives customers the ability to preview art and other wall-mounted products. <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/02\/01\/art-com-adds-augmented-reality-art-viewing-to-its-ios-app\/\">TechCrunch looked<\/a> at the new feature and came away impressed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The company\u2019s ArtView feature is one of the few augmented reality features that actually adds a lot to the app it\u2019s put in. With the ARKit-enabled tech, the artwork is accurately sized so you can get a perfect idea of how your next purchase could fit on your wall. The feature can be used for the two million pieces of art on the site and can be customized with different framing types.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Beauty product companies have used relatively crude augmented reality \u201cmirrors\u201d for years, but advances in AR have created new opportunities to refine and improve on the concept.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26075\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26075\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26075\" src=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/27131340\/sephora_virtual_artist_tutorials_5_hr.0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/27131340\/sephora_virtual_artist_tutorials_5_hr.0.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/27131340\/sephora_virtual_artist_tutorials_5_hr.0-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/27131340\/sephora_virtual_artist_tutorials_5_hr.0-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sephora integrated AR into its iOS app by creating a <a>Virtual Artist<\/a> that gave customers the opportunity to try beauty products out first before buying.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sephora paved the way when it released \u201cSephora Virtual Artist\u201d as part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/sephora-makeup-beauty-app-insider-tips-style\/id393328150?mt=8\">iOS app<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/sephora-visual-artist-app-feature-teaches-how-to-apply-makeup-using-ai-photos-2017-3\">The app<\/a> creates a scan of your face and then lets you play around with lip colors, eyebrows, and eyelashes. It also has video tutorials that use your face to demonstrate makeup application techniques.<\/p>\n<p>The virtual artist feature was created in partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/modiface.com\">Modiface<\/a>, an augmented reality technology firm. Modiface has also partnered with other beauty brands like MAC and Est\u00e9e Lauder.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"AR Experiments: Explorations in Augmented Reality\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G-sQl5Xddp8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And let\u2019s not forget the millions of people using Android devices.<\/p>\n<p>Customers using Android phones and tablets will get a chance to use tools like this now that Google has also rolled <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/ar\/\">ARCore<\/a>, its own AR developer kit.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s still too early to know how useful adding AR to the shopping experience will be, the potential is there.<\/p>\n<h2>Will it show me more?<\/h2>\n<p>One of the most promising applications of augmented reality is how it can be used to bring information and new experiences to people in surprising and engaging ways.<\/p>\n<p>Augmented reality can turn a static image or object into something full of movement and wonder.<\/p>\n<p>Many companies are using this to bring new life (almost literally) to existing marketing campaigns, or launch unique experiences purely based on AR.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"AMC Theatres App - Augmented Reality How-To\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pBPSFU-cUFg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>An early example of this technique is movie theatre chain AMC\u2019s use of AR to extend movie posters.
