And, as an entrepreneur, manager, or supervisor, it\u2019s incredibly valuable to know your leadership style- and to understand your strengths and weaknesses. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The most successful leaders do share some common traits. For example, they avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/4-toxic-behaviors-entrepreneurs-leaders-avoid\/\">toxic behaviors<\/a> that can destroy their teams. They&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/the-most-important-skill-every-successful-leader-must-have\/\">good listeners<\/a>. And they understand the difference between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/how-not-to-suck-as-a-leader\/\">management and leadership<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Seth Godin, in his book<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/start-up-tip-leadership-is-not-management\/\">Tribes<\/a><\/em>, explains the difference:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Management is about manipulating resources to get a known job done \u2026 Managers manage a process they\u2019ve seen before, and they react to the outside world, striving to make that process as fast and as cheap as possible. Leadership, on the other hand, is about creating a change that you believe in.<\/p>\n<p>My thesaurus says the best synonym for <em>leadership<\/em> is\u00a0<em>management<\/em>. Maybe that word used to fit, but no longer. Movements have leaders and movements make things happen.<\/p>\n<p>Leaders have followers. Mananagers have employees.<\/p>\n<p>Managers make widgets. Leaders make change.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_Drucker\">Peter Drucker<\/a> famously summarized this by stating there\u2019s a difference between doing things right (management) and doing the right things (leadership).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/leadership-management-small-business-startups\/\">management and leadership are important<\/a>, but of the two, leadership has a bigger impact on the success or failure of an organization. A <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/opinion\/chairman\/209033\/sure-great-workplace-culture.aspx?g_source=CATEGORY_LEADERSHIP&amp;g_medium=topic&amp;g_campaign=tiles\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent Gallup article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reveals that the single most important factor in determining whether your business\u2019s work culture is good, bad or great is leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remarkably, 70% of the variance between lousy, good and great cultures can be found in the knowledge, skills and talent of the team leader. Not the players, but the team leader. This is one of Gallup&#8217;s most profound workplace breakthroughs.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what kind of leader are you?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is probably one of the toughest leadership interview questions you&#8217;d ever hear, but If you know the answer to this question, you can learn how to get the most out of your natural leadership style. Or maybe, you can even consider adopting a different style that better fits your personality, business, or employees. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are seven of the most common leadership styles for entrepreneurs and small business owners:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Autocratic Leader<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The autocratic (or authoritative) leader is the stereotypical \u201cbossy\u201d boss. They <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywell.com\/leadership-styles-2795312\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make decisions on their own<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and lay down the law. Employees\u2019 opinions are not welcome, but their obedience is required. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The autocratic leadership style isn\u2019t as cut-and-dried as the stereotype would suggest. While it may not be the most diplomatic approach, there are definite benefits to this leadership style.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pros &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effective autocratic leaders <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywell.com\/leadership-styles-2795312\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set clear guidelines<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so their employees know what is expected of them. This creates a framework for employees to succeed by working toward their assigned goals within those set guidelines. This is particularly useful when the leader is the most knowledgeable person in the group. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autocratic leadership also allows for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywell.com\/leadership-styles-2795312\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rapid decision-making and decisive action<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since there\u2019s no need to consult or debate with others. It also establishes a consistent vision for the company- the autocrat\u2019s vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While authoritarian leadership certainly is not the best choice for each and every situation, it can be effective and beneficial in cases where followers need a great deal of direction and where rules and standards must be followed to the letter.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Cons &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The downside to autocratic leadership is that it can leave employees feeling unheard and disrespected. Making your employees feel heard will make them feel valued and provide greater job satisfaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Murphy of Leadership IQ shared <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/markmurphy\/2017\/01\/08\/2-early-warning-signs-your-leadership-style-is-too-harsh-for-your-employees\/#5cd48c7964b4\">this advice in Forbes<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While your inclination may be to yell some exhortations to \u2018suck it up\u2019 and \u2018stop whining,\u2019 that\u2019s the wrong move. Essentially, \u201cYou do this for me, and I will give you that.\u201d As a result, transactional leaders need not concern themselves with the nuance of managing each employee based on emotional needs. According to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leadership-central.com\/transactional-leadership-theories.html#axzz4fC3Y7Vew\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leadership Central<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, transactional leadership theory assumes that all employees are motivated by the same <a href=\"https:\/\/peoplemanagingpeople.com\/tools\/best-employee-recognition-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rational reward system<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pros &#8211;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Transactional leadership <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywell.com\/leadership-styles-2795312\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">establishes very clear roles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the workplace. The leader sets goals and controls the reward, while the employee earns their reward by meeting it. The more the employee sells, the more they make. Without an emotional connection, it\u2019s easy for a transactional leader to view employees merely as the means to an end. Hisham Sorour <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/top-11-ways-increase-your-employee-loyalty-hisham-sorour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explains<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an employer, you need to understand why your employees are emotionally connected to your business \u2013 and it\u2019s generally much more than salaries, training, or benefits. Research shows that emotionally connected employees are the best employees because they are engaged and productive, and they feel validated and appreciated.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, find ways of encouraging creative thinking in your office. This is the lifeblood of innovation. Holding a contest (another form of transactional leadership) to reward the most useful creative ideas should be right in your wheelhouse.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Visionary Leader<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The visionary leader unifies their employees to <a href=\"http:\/\/yourbusiness.azcentral.com\/characteristics-visionary-leadership-9056.html\">work toward a common vision or goal<\/a>. Rather than dictating or purchasing their employees\u2019 efforts, the visionary inspires. By sharing an exciting vision- and emphasizing how their employees <a href=\"http:\/\/www.money-zine.com\/definitions\/career-dictionary\/visionary-leadership-style\/\">will play an important role<\/a> in making that vision a reality- visionary leaders build loyalty and move everyone toward creating their shared goal. Visionary leaders do not usually outline specific expectations, instead <a href=\"http:\/\/yourbusiness.azcentral.com\/characteristics-visionary-leadership-9056.html\">encouraging their employees to find their own way<\/a> of doing things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.money-zine.com\/definitions\/career-dictionary\/visionary-leadership-style\/\">Money-zine&#8217;s definition<\/a> of a visionary leader states that,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The leader is inspiring in vision, and helps others to see how they can contribute to this vision; allowing the leader and followers to move together towards a shared view of the future.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Pros &#8211;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Visionary leadership inspires loyalty to both the leader and the goal. Loyal workers experience a sense of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/yourbusiness.azcentral.com\/characteristics-visionary-leadership-9056.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">solidarity with their team and motivation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to achieve their goals. Being part of something larger than themselves can create much worker satisfaction. This can make it tough for them to guide their employees through the minutiae of getting from point A to point B. And, know your strengths and acknowledge your weaknesses. If details aren\u2019t your thing, hire someone excellent to manage the details for you. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/martinzwilling\/2015\/06\/16\/5-shortcomings-of-a-visionary-and-how-to-compensate\/#551518c54348\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zwilling recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8230;the operational expert, who is very good at leading, managing, and holding people accountable\u2026. When a major initiative is undertaken, they will anticipate the ripple of implications across the organization.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>The Laissez-Faire Leader<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laissez-faire leadership is all about keeping your hands off and leaving your employees free to find their own way. It\u2019s also known as \u201cdelegation\u201d leadership in some circles because laissez-faire leaders often delegate tasks to subordinates rather than retain control. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This leadership style requires that you show your employees a lot of trust- if you need to be in control at all times, laissez-faire leadership is not the style for you. That way, you\u2019ll know who might need extra guidance and who doesn\u2019t. Of course, that also means that if you have an employee or two needing extra help, you ensure they receive it. You can spend extra time with them yourself or make sure that you establish a support structure that can help in your absence. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.josephchris.com\/11-laissez-faire-leadership-style-examples\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris concurs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, saying,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If staff members are unfamiliar with the process or task, leaders should take a more hands-on approach, and eventually, as followers gain more expertise, they may then switch back to a more delegative approach.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>The Democratic Leader<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Democratic leadership strikes a balance between the autocrat and the laissez-faire leader. Democratic leaders value the input of their employees but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywell.com\/leadership-styles-2795312\">reserve ultimate decision-making rights<\/a> for themselves. In democratic leadership, there is less of a distinct divide between the leader and the subordinates, as the leader is willing to participate with (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywell.com\/leadership-styles-2795312\">accept input from<\/a>) their employees. Groundbreaking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywell.com\/leadership-styles-2795312\">leadership researcher Kurt Lewin<\/a> felt that the democratic leadership style was the most effective. By utilizing their input, you stand to gain a wider perspective and learn things you may have otherwise missed. And, if you regularly err too far on the side of decision-making by committee, it can slow your business down. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What Democratic Leaders Can Do Better:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know when to make the tough calls by yourself. In situations calling for speedy action, you\u2019ve got to be willing to make your own decisions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/brentgleeson\/2012\/11\/07\/4-ways-for-leaders-to-make-a-decision\/#331285bf4d4a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former Navy Seal Brent Gleeson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calls this command decision-making. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Command decision-making&#8230; where leaders make decisions without consulting their teams&#8230; is an effective style, especially when things are moving quickly and the team is looking for immediate guidance.
