It doesn\u2019t give the designer any direction or explain why it needs more \u201czing\u201d in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t want your designer to guess what you mean.<\/p>\n<p>Make your designers swoon with useful feedback like: \u201cthe colors you\u2019ve picked aren\u2019t vibrant enough &#8211; we know our target audience prefers lively, bright colors like yellow and pink.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHow well we communicate is determined not by how well we say things, but how well we are understood.\u201d<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>Andrew Grove<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Are you presenting the problem or prescribing a solution?<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cDoctor, I have stomach pain. Give me a prescription for an antacid and tell me to sleep on it.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You\u2019re working with a designer because you want their expertise. As tempting as it can be to make suggestions (\u201cMake it like this design I created in Powerpoint last night\u2026&#8221;), providing your designer with just the problem that needs to be solved is more effective. As a subject area expert, your designer can access information and solutions that you are probably not aware of.<\/p>\n<p>You want to tap into that knowledge and, importantly, their creativity. Your designer doesn\u2019t expect you to describe the issue and design the solution: that\u2019s what they\u2019re there to do.<\/p>\n<h3>How does your feedback help designers reach your objectives?<\/h3>\n<p>Providing specific feedback is one thing; ensuring that your feedback helps you and your designer reach your goals is another.<\/p>\n<p>As the saying goes, \u201cyou are not your customer.\u201d Your opinion might represent a section of your audience, but taste is subjective.<\/p>\n<p>You may hate the color brown, but if your market research shows that brown most effectively communicates your brand to your customers, that information should lead the way. Ultimately, your designer is looking for the best solution to the problems you\u2019ve given her to solve.<\/p>\n<h3>Are you leaving your designer hanging?<\/h3>\n<p>The success of any relationship starts with communication, and design feedback is no different.
