Interbrand&#8217;s report is considered to be one of the most influential benchmark studies on brand value.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at the report&#8217;s highlights and the significant trends and lessons startups and small businesses can learn from the world&#8217;s best brands.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re not confident you understand the meaning of &#8220;brand,&#8221; here&#8217;s a quick primer from <a title=\"branding secrets best of the world's best brands\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/startups-small-business-branding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Branding Secrets of the World&#8217;s Best Brands<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A brand is the sum total of the experience your prospects and customers have with your company. A strong brand communicates what your company does, how it does it, and at the same time, establishes trust and credibility with your prospects and customers. Your company\u2019s brand is, in many ways, its personality. Your brand lives in everyday interactions your company has with its prospects and customers, including the images you share, the messages you post on your website, the content of your marketing materials, your presentations and booths at conferences, and your posts on social networks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The Highlights from Interbrand&#8217;s 2011 Report<\/h2>\n<p>Coca-Cola is the world&#8217;s best brand, according to Interbrand (for the 12th consecutive year).<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Apple made the top ten (Apple&#8217;s brand value increased 58%). Apple&#8217;s growth is most impressive &#8211; especially when measured against the development of other brands in the top 10 and when one considers the world&#8217;s challenging economic conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Technology brands continued to dominate the top 10 (IBM, Microsoft, Google, GE, Intel, Apple, and Hewlett-Packard). This was also true for four of the top five biggest risers in the top 100 (Apple, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/amazon-logo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a>, Google, and Samsung).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not surprising that North America dominates the ranking (Germany, with ten brands on the list, comes in second). But there are always exciting outliers. In 2010, the Mexican brand Corona made the list; this year, HTC from Taiwan made the top 100.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/branding-secrets-small-business\/brand-map\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13043\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13043\" title=\"Brand Map\" src=\"https:\/\/images.crowdspring.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/27132507\/Brand-Map.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"448\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>How brands use mobile changed significantly in 2011:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>91% of significant brands today offer a mobile application (a massive increase from 18 months ago, when only 51% of brands offered a mobile application)<\/li>\n<li>Only 23% of brands offer apps on the Blackberry platform (and just 9% offer apps via Nokia&#8217;s app store). These platforms are effectively dead.<\/li>\n<li>59% of brands have Android applications, and 86% offer an iPhone app.<\/li>\n<li>The vast majority of brands (73%) offer free applications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Lessons for startups and small business<\/h2>\n<p>Whether you&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/blog\/starting-a-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">starting a business<\/a> or running an existing business, you can learn a lot from the world&#8217;s best brands.<\/p>\n<p>Interbrand identified three major trends driving marketing today: differentiation, collaboration, and humanizing technology.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Differentiate your business<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Social Media platforms have substantially increased noise levels &#8211; trivial and average ideas quickly get lost in that noise.<\/p>\n<p>Many marketing efforts will fall flat &#8211; especially if companies attempt to engage with their customers in traditional ways.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking different is more than just having a unique <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/logo-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">logo design<\/a>, great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/business-tagline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tagline<\/a>, or memorable <a title=\"10 Tips For Startips And Small Businesses On Naming Your Company\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/naming-a-business-or-product\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">company name<\/a>. In some cases, as with the iPad, its products are so intuitive that they are being used as learning tools for the autistic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>People want to deal with people &#8211; not faceless brands or boring products.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re going to develop an email newsletter, make it fun and engaging. If you&#8217;re going to participate on social networks, <a href=\"http:\/\/darmano.typepad.com\/logic_emotion\/2010\/11\/humanizing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">build your ambassador ecosystem<\/a>.
