Creative brief

The buyer added updates to the brief. Read them.

Business Name

Yarnbox

What do you do?

We offer a subscription based yarn of the month club. Each month we send a fancy box with an exotic or brand new luxury yarn inside. Each month we feature at least one different yarn and the distributor of that product will be invited to send promotional materials and patterns for that yarn in the box as well.

Do you have a desired website screen size?

800px wide for content and a background that will span any monitor size.

How many pages (maximum of 4) do you need designed?

Homepage, Two different "how it works" pages that shows 3 different levels of membership (1, 3, 6 mo.) and a order page that will have a persistent form that will update while the customer stays on the same page.

What is your industry?

Retailing

Describe the target audience for your website design

Knitters! Knitters are passionate about their hobby. They pour their entire lives into the craft. They spend as much time on knitting as you do working on art...maybe more. They knit at night, in the morning, at business meetings at work, in the car. Knitters love yarn.

What 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your website design

1 and 2 are equal importance. 3 is pretty important. 4 I threw in there.

(1) We will only send luxury yarns from independent manufacturers or luxury brand new just introduced yarns from more mainstream distributors. We won't send tired yarns or yarns widely available.

(2) They will have choice - They can choose a color preference, warm cool, jewel tones. They can opt out of receiving yarns that they may never use. For example, they can specify not to receive lace weight or super bulky. We want to assure them they won't be stuck with crap they can't or won't use.

(3) Value - We work with distributors and manufacturers that provide us with yarns at or below their cost so we can cram the box full of yarns that may cost double at a retail store.

(4) Variety - A new treasure from a different manufacturer each and every month, not available to them at their local store.

How is your company different from your competitors?

What website design styles do you like?

www.ravelry.com - This site is just like facebook but for knitters. All my customers know and love this site

Out of 30 sites that sell a similar subscription service, these are my favorites in order as far as functionality and selling method.

https://barkbox.com/
http://www.craftcoffee.com/
http://consciousbox.com/
https://musthave.popsugar.com/
http://www.standardcocoa.com/
http://www.kiwicrate.com/
http://myolivebox.com/
https://www.forthemakers.com/
https://umbabox.com/

Barkbox - My favorite. How cute are those dogs. I LOVE the feel good part and clear message at top and then more of the meat of how things work at the bottom. I could live with the same format as this site but I would put actual product pictures at the bottom. Also after you click get started it is too white. They would have done better to stick with some background color once you start to buy.

http://www.craftcoffee.com/ - Yes, it is a completely different product but the layout is great. I can almost SMELL the coffee. They have a clear message, a huge call to action button, it's message is clean and clear and I can scroll down to learn more.

http://consciousbox.com/ - Great background, clear message, large call to action, more detail at bottom. I would like to see the main image of the pinecones and soap scroll, but that's programming, not art stuff.

The above three sites are all really good. The next ones are just good.

https://musthave.popsugar.com/ - Love the huge photos, hate the huge photos. At least it's not white. It's neat to see what happens when you make your browser only half your screen, or when you hit Ctrl+ a bunch of times and zoom out...

http://www.standardcocoa.com/ - I still like the clear message but I don't like the call to action (no buy now button) and I don't like that I can't see a tangible item. I like the space when I scroll down, not too cramped.

https://www.forthemakers.com/ - good call to action button, but a little too boxy for me. Images don't tell me what they sell right away.

http://www.kiwicrate.com/ - This one is hard to talk about. The site is designed to the exact customer they are selling to, anal rich women who rub anti-bacterial soap on their kids hands 10 times a day. And those people probably love this site. I don't like that there isn't a big act now button, but anal rich women are not impulse buyers. I love it, I hate it.

http://myolivebox.com/ - Starting to see this site's flaws. It's a bit too boring, too white, theire join now button is not fun, their logo is kinda bothering me now. (but I still love the Tape they use on their box)

https://umbabox.com/ - almost the same as the site above, too white, too boring. Good, not great.

What colors do you want to see in your website design?

Nothing is required. We are selling yarn and one of the two biggest hurdles is that people like to TOUCH yarn before they buy it. This site needs to overcome that by making the customer feel that they are buying something of great value.

What colors do you NOT want to see in your website design?

I don't like the color scheme in the header for this site.

http://theproperpinwheel.com/

What adjectives should best describe your website design?

Soft, warm, happy, inviting, treasure, value,

What content must be included in the website design?

Just follow the format of the other websites I provided. We want to sell subscriptions for a yarn of the month club, not reinvent the wheel.

Do you have additional requirements or links you want to share?

I may add a video to the homepage at some point like crowdspring has. If I don't do that I may have a set of images cycle. Please consider flexibility for future design edits in your layout.

I don't want to pay for the rights to use someone else's images.

Our boxes will look similiar to myolivebox.com boxes, brown cardboard with a white tape with our name on the tape. I would like to have a picture of the actual box at some point but unfortunately the boxes do not exist yet because the site isn't designed. It's a chicken and egg thing.

I plan on communicating as much as possible.

THANKS and have fun!

Brief updates

The buyer has uploaded a new file in this project. You can download that file in the DETAILS tab.

Thank you for reviewing our project. We added a mood board of some colors that we like. This should provide more direction and make your task easier.

Also, we have been asked about a logo. We don't have one at this time. It would be just fine for you to use our company name, yarnbox, with a black font. Please check the logo at www.ravelry.com as we really like that. Anything similar is just fine. We won't be judging designs by the logo but if you did something special with our name it would be fun to see.

Please send us a message if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

ART ART ART!

One problem so far with all the designs is that they don't convey the level of quality that we want to see. It's not your fault, you didn't have access to high quality yarn images. An example of a yarn related site that DOES have that sexy, expensive, high class image we are going for is http://www.sweetgeorgiayarns.com.

We now have a ton of artwork you can use. Browse the images at http://www.flickr.com/photos/hthiessen/ and use any that you wish.

Thanks for all the submissions so far!

Hello. Thank you everybody for your submissions so far. Please visit this website and see the exact layout we want our site to have.

http://myyarnbox.com/layout.pdf

We would like you to spend your time working on developing an identity for our brand, not on where to put buttons. Many of the submissions so far make us feel like the product we sell is cheap. We hope you can focus more on creating a theme that gives our site personality.

Thanks and good luck!
