It's about the feeling that there is too much height before the main navigation starts, which is not a good practice. I can lower it a bit by removing the black segment and put the "login" and "register' button after the search button, with some kind of delimiter of course. That way the page will start from the green segment. This would be good if of course you don't need that "...important sentence...".
I didn't mentioned that I purposely made different content length of titles and text at the article's listing in order to reflect a real-world example. So as you can see some articles have longer and shorter title or text than usual, yet still does not break up the design.

You pointed out good remarks. Based on those I updated the home page. Now it has 3 columns the main column (440px width) ,the narrow sidebar (1600x width), the wide sidebar (300px width) I purposely designed toward those dimensions, because they are suitable if you plan to implement other standard dimension ads in the future.
Adding the third column also makes space for content growth. If you plan to add future content boxes, as you mentioned, you could choose between 3 different widths and decide in which column it suits best. However, it's logical the main column to stay longest.
I also simplified the articles listing as you suggested and the icons for following are changed. I also added a pagination part, since I assume you'll need it.
