I really like the font and the range of colors. I agree that the unadorned 'b' is best.
I quite like the device you've used on the 4th version. Is it possible you can develop that a bit to show how it might extend to other uses on the site?
Disclosure: I created everything in my entry and I didn't copy anyone else's concept. (?)
While I was searching for the perfect font for Bamboo, I was noticing how great the name looks in so many fonts. With the roundness of all the letters and how they compliment each other in this particular streamlined font, I couldn't help but think this one looks great with only the name, using the b as the main logo element.
Using only colors of green to personalize it, I chose a sophisticated looking green for the first one, a lighter, warmer feeling hue on the second one, and natural colors for the 3rd and 4th.
I included a touch of bamboo leaves as an additional graphic element of interest for the last two, though I think the name is just as strong without it, and the simple b for a favicon is more distinct than the ones with extra details.
I think a great aspect of this one, is if you need to use the logos in different venues, (e.g. 37 signals, same globe shape containing different icons) You could use the open center of the b to serve as the frame for multiple icons. Just a thought. :)
