Creative brief

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:

Terra Media is a recently established company based in Chicago. Our core competency will be B2C, but we expect to be engaged in B2B frequently as well. Our vertical is the videogame industry. Our current project is building THE online community site to connect gamers across the globe. Terra Media is committed to connecting gamers across geographical and linguistic barriers through the interaction of various media types and platforms. Our team is very competent across a wide range of technologies to ensure unique and memorable experiences for our customers.

HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:

We need a logo for Terra Media (or terra media) that is simple, artistic and professional. It should be clean and be B&W print-friendly but also elaborate enough to be expanded upon on the web. The logo should be easily recognizable / brandable so that people can recognize it as ours quickly – in other words eye-catching. The logo does not need to be symbolically related to the words Terra or Media, but we would not be adverse to an attempt that incorporated these elements if done well. We would like to have an icon of some sort to represent our company; i.e. we don’t simply want the words Terra Media stylized. Finally, we want to re-emphasize that the logo must be professional and stylish – things we don’t want are logos that are too: busy, frilly, techie, flowery, subdued, artsy, grungy, conservative, obnoxious, or mom-and-pop.

OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:

Our primary audience will be professionals, businesses, or investors within the game industry who will be looking to get information on our current projects and direction. Generally speaking however, we expect to be attracting individuals in all fields and with varying levels of technical expertise who are interested in social networking and the gaming industry. Note that our PRODUCTS will be more consumer oriented, while we will remain a professional business.

WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:

The logo provided with this brief is something we like but due to copyright restrictions, will not suit our purposes. Ideally, we would like a logo similar to this one as it is something we like and is close to what we want; however we encourage new designs as well. Things to change could include; a redesign of the portal type image, change in font, color palette, element placement, etc. Again, logos that go in other directions, (for example, a total redesign) will also be considered as long as they meet the general criteria described above.

WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:

The only element currently set in stone is that the logo must contain our company name Terra Media (upper or lower case) and go well with whatever image accompanies it.

We are currrently evaluating whether or not to have the representation be 'terra media' or 'terramedia'. Please provide submissions with your preference. Thanks!

Having the two words distinguishable is also welcome.

Thanks for all the hard work so far!

First let me say thanks for all the submissions. We've been overwhelmed by the creativity of the community and are fortunate enough to have the luxury of so many great entries and the ability to be selective.

We would like to provide a little more guidance at this time.

-Any submission must look acceptable in B&W, so please submit a B&W version if you haven't done so. If your submission separates the words 'terra' and 'media' or captalizes each word, we are ok with a single color logo. If your submission contains 'terramedia' as one word, it MUST be distinguishable via some sort of grayscale measure. We've had enough people feel that 'terramedia' becomes difficult to pronounce if it appears to be one word. Distinguishing these words is imperative for a B/W layout.

-The word 'Terra' comes from latin roots meaning earth or land. If you are submitting an illustration, it might help to keep that in mind. Many of the submissions have very cool images within the logo, but these images have no meaning other than they are cool looking. If there is some meaning behind your illustration, please share it. Note that this is NOT a requirement, but merely a suggestion.

-Many abstract designs have been submitted thus far and we feel there is a pattern emerging. In many submissions, there 'seems' to be a lack of cohesion between the image & the text. In several submissions it quite literally feels like "cool picture" + text. Since there's no clear way to explain an abstract image and link it to the concept of terra media, we would request that you somehow incorporate the image cleverly into the text in some way.

-One other thing to note is that many of the submissions have repeating geometric patterns. This can be a tough road because purely mathematical patterns can suggest we're scientific, and can easily turn into a commodity since they are easily reproduceable. We are totally ok with logos containing these elements, however if you'll look at our original logo, there was some stylistic distinction within the existing pattern. We would ask that you incorporate some stylistic distinction within your patterns to really make them stand out.

We will be submitting a new logo project within 7 days of this project closing. If you are interested in participating in this next project and have enjoyed working with us, please PM us and we'll happily invite you to the next project in the same vertical space.

A COMPLETE logo design is the goal here, and we believe heavily in the capability of the designers that have participated thus far. We thank you and are willing to provide as much feedback as necessary to clarify our tastes to the best of our ability.
