LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:

‘Kidzkuts’ is a brand new business offering kids in childcare centres great haircuts by professional hairdressers. Hairdressers who are fantastic with kids and their hair visit daycare centres that have become Kidzkuts members and cut and style the hair of pre-paid child-clients. Parents pre-pay online.

Kids love it because their friends are having a haircut at the same time and because the employed hairdressers are great with kids and give special treats such as stickers, balloons, hairclips etc.

Parents love it because it’s convenient and takes the hassle of trying to find a hairdresser on the weekend (who usually caters to adults) and the kids squiggle and squirm. And they order and pay easily on-line. However, it is critical they are confident their child’s hair is cut by a fully professional, child-specialist hairdresser while at childcare/daycare because they won't be there to watch it happening. The childcare centres benefit from being able to provide another essential service to busy working parents at no cost to the centre and possibly receive a commission.

Kidzkuts stand for professional quality haircuts for kids; fun for kids in a familiar environment, convenient and quality assured for busy parents.

Currently there are only a few individual hairdressers servicing a few individual centres. Our goal is for Kidzkuts to service all childcare centres as a core service (like hot lunches and education programs). We want to cover this niche market with our great service.

When it comes to hairdressing, we think ‘barbers’ are for men, ‘salons’ are for women and ‘kidzkuts’ are for kids.

HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:

A branding logo using the name Kidzkuts. With or without graphic

This logo is the cornerstone of our branding which covers brochures are given to parents via the childcare centre; the website where transactions take place, stationery, it needs to work well on large signs and easily understood from a distance yet able to work on small promotional items such as pencils, balloons, magnets (possibly t-shirts).

Easy to read at a distance.

Simple design, clean, bold.

Conveys professionalism and ‘ease of use’

Appealing to children - fun but not ‘clownish’ or ‘childish’

Not ‘feminine’ or ‘masculine’ and more zest than ‘unisex’

Smooth, precision texture reflecting professional, attention to detail and high standards.

Kidzkuts is one word however it might work well to use different fonts, colours or letters for each word or I'm even open to separating ‘Kidz’ from ‘Kuts’ if that creates a better logo. Keen to see a designer's opinion on this.

OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:

Overall we want the logo to show we are fun, highly professional, easy to use and trustworthy.

We have 4 audiences:

1 First and foremost, the parents of small children (0-5 years) in daycare – they are the paying customer– they tend to be working, time-stretched and want the best for their child. They need steam-lined convenience and absolute confidence their child is receiving high quality care.

2 - the childcare centre directors and owners who agree for Kidzkuts to visit their centre/s every 6 weeks. They want confidence that this is a quality service and will not impact on their existing workload. So Kidzkuts must exude professionalism and steam-lined service

3 - the children who associate Kidzkuts with fun and a ‘special event’. 0-5 yrs old.

4 – the hairdressers who are proud to be working for a high-quality, child-focused flexible organisation.

Please keep in mind: the business may extend in the future to include children aged between 5-12 yrs so the logo cannot exclusively about babies and toddlers.

WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:

We must have easy-to-read fonts – clear to read on small items and from a distance on posters.
Instill a sense of confidence of professionalism and child-awareness.

Please avoid pastel colours – too ‘babyish’

Please avoid anything too ‘fussy’ or ‘decorative’

I’m somewhat doubtful about using images of scissors as they inherently seem sharp and child-unfriendly especially to cautious parents however I’m very happy to be challenged if your design still meets the criteria of instilling confidence in the parents their children are in good hands!

Brief updates

Hi all, to date I've been conscientiously giving feedback on all submissions. This has resulted in many conscientious designers giving me almost instantaneous revisions (even it they are minor colour changes). With much respect and appreciation - thank you. However, this being my first time using CrowdSpring I would like to try a new approach whereby I will choose a shortlist prior to close of competition and then offer more fine-tuning comments or requests to the short-listed to revise at their discretion. My intention is to respect your time and just compare the designs at a conceptual level at this early stage. I assume minor changes can be made in wrap-up.

If I have more 'conceptual' comments/responses I would probably prefer to give them through PM. If this is not suitable - please let me know when submitting.

I will put all comments useful in a broader context, here on the updates. Thank you

About colours: I like the advice given by crowdspring:

"If you are looking for a color logo, consider the messaging that color sends to your customers. Do the colors reinforce and strengthen the intended core message/personality/mood you’re trying to communicate through the logo, or do they distract or neutralize? For example, blue often communicates trust, loyalty and freshness. The color blue is common in banking or finance. Green represents life, nature and cleanliness. Also consider colors that work well with dark and white backgrounds. Because logos are often printed in black and white, chose a logo design that is viable and as strong or stronger in black and white.

Although gradients provide an aesthetically-pleasing effect on computers, consider possible future uses of the logo such as on letterheads, business cards, and merchandise. Will the logo provide ease of printing and reproduction in and on all types of media? A logo for a website or a band, or a one-off project can be more rasterized and colorful than something that’s going to be printed in many different ways."

That said, I've tended to prefer the logos with 3 colours (with some exceptions of course) While I'm acutely aware of the costs/complications of printing with multiple colours, I'm happy to go with these because they often appeal to kids or communicate 'kids'.

However, more importantly, before choosing the final logo, I will be comparing them in black and white, with a dark background/light background, large and small etc - because the logo will be used in many sizes and many mediums.

The only certain colour guidance I can give is that it's become clear that a two colour logo using the blue and red tones you see on the Australian/U.S./English/French flag is not going to work for me. I see them as slightly masculine/staid/common/political and not 'eye-catching' or 'alive' enough (even though they meet the criteria of bold and clear).

The following comments are personal preferences and I have appreciated seeing designs that challenged these and work well. So, please 'break the rules' if it is best for your design and it meets the core messages I'm wanting to portray.

The purpose of the logo is to reflect that Kidzkuts is a slick, professional organisation that is trustworthy. So the primary 'messaging' is to adults - childcare centre owners and the parents. I also want the logo to the uniquely recognisable to small children. (thus a simple black work won't be recognisable for them).

My personal preferences (happy to be challenged on these): I tend to steer away from the paler colours; combinations or predominance of colours that give the logo an overall 'masculine' or 'feminine' feeling.

And while I have a personal leaning toward green, I try to ignore that.

Hope this helps.
