LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT US:

We are building a news portal at www.ConsumerNews.com that will present news and commentary from a distinctively pro-consumer point-of-view.

HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:

With a startup news website, we want to be careful to look credible, in line with older, established news sites. At the same time, we don't want to look staid, and would prefer to look cutting-edge, yet established and credible, if you're a designer who can work both looks into a single logo. We don't really want anything that looks cartoonish or like something a guy did for fun as a favor using Photoshop.
We would like to be able to use the logo both on the website and on business cards, etc.

OUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS:

Well-educated consumers who do their research before making a decision, consumer advocates, medical, legal and other professionals looking for information on product safety and recalls.

WE LIKE THESE DESIGNS:

Some of them don't have a lot in common, but we like the logos at:
www.bing.com
www.barackobama.com
www.bloomberg.com
www.permissionTV.com (I'm just saying what we like; I know we can't use a TV)
www.usatoday.com

WE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE (or we don't want to see) THIS IN OUR DESIGN:

Anything cartoonish, amateurish, or anything that would give the appearance that the design was hastily done by someone without an eye for design.

I also should add that we strongly dislike the color yellow. I looked again this morning at the logos I listed last night, I really like the Bing font and look best, but I realize it may be hard to use it and still look like a real, substantial news site. But it might be worth giving it a shot. Also, (and it may be my own personal, non-creative idea) I thought about integrating a lighthouse or spotlight to emphasize that we're providing light on the subjects of interest to consumers. If anybody gives the lighthouse or spotlight a shot, try not to let it overwhelm the name to the extent that people don't remember ConsumerNews.
Thanks.
