What do you do?

We publish books, both fiction and non-fiction. This particular project is for the cover of an award-winning middle grade novel set in China, 1902, titled "The Girl Mechanic Of Wanzhou."

How many pages of print design do you need?

One book cover (front, spine, and back).

List the size requirement(s) for your print design

The book size is 9"x6".
The spine width is 0.414"
The bleed is 0.125"
The entire dimensions are thus: 9.25 inches height by 12.539 inches width.

What is your industry?

Publishing and Media

Describe the target audience for your print design

Readers of middle grade novels: kids aged around 11, with an interest in China, kung fu, bicycles, mechanics, a little bit steampunk, adventure.

What 3 things would you like to communicate to your audience through your print design?

This novel has action, adventure, and poetry. It's mood ranges from funny to sad. It's steeped in Chinese culture but accessible to an english reader.

What print design styles do you like?

Here is the Scholastic India cover design:

I'd like one that works in the U.S. for the U.S. audience.
Here's a Miyazaki film illustration I like:

What colors do you want to see in your print design?

I want the colors to reflect the ideas and mood: history, China, strong women, the new machine age, against classic landscape.

What colors do you NOT want to see in your print design?

um, pastels and pinks.

What adjectives should best describe your print design?

Appealing, a modern take on history, smart.

How will you use the print design?

To cover the book, in miniature form on amazon. It has to lure readers in bookstores, library, schools.

What content must be included in the print design?

On the back cover, I need a small marketing text such as:

Step into the busy, dusty streets of a small city in China in 1902 with Zun as she sets out on her quest to avenge her father's death and to rescue her mother, armed with only a green silk purse and some potions.

The front cover should feature Zun, a 12 year old Chinese girl. Her forward thinking parents did not bind her feet and they taught her to read, write, do math and fix bicycles. In the story, her father is killed and her mother is kidnapped, and their dreams of founding a bicycle factory are lost. She finds unexpected help from a kung fu master, his two foundling sons, and their pet pig.

The front cover needs a clear image of Zun. There can be other images of the other characters or elements (bicycle, chinese streets) whatever works.
